Cold snow at Lake Louise

Excellent trail conditions

We couldn’t believe how good the snow and trail conditions were at Lake Louise today. The Great Divide had just been groomed and trackset. Moraine Lake Road was excellent. Tramline – check. We even did the Bow River and Campground Loop  which was recently trackset and in great shape. It looked like there had been about 1 cm of new snow overnight. The air temperature was around -1. It’s possible that earlier in the week that the snow was wet, but we saw no signs of deterioration due to warm weather. Lake Louise may be the destination of choice this weekend.

Trail conditions in PLPP

Update Jan 15(this looks like great news): Comment from Jeff: “Just a note Wheeler was track set last night(jan 14) as well as the trails around William Watson Lodge. There is still very good snow coverage in there and the new tracks are a big improvement from the way it was. Most of the tree debris was tilled into the snowpack and is no longer an issue.”

As well, Cheryl and I hope to get out there today and check things out.  If conditions look favourable, we will continue with plans for the ski club trip to PLPP on Sunday. For more details on the trip Calgary Ski Club trip info.

The following is from the PLPP trail report of Jan 14:

“…Tuesday’s high of plus 10 had a negative impact. Many lower elevation trails, particularly at the north end of PLPP, became quite saturated and are very icy in sections. Higher elevation trails like Elk Pass didn’t melt out quite as badly but warm temperatures in the daytime followed by cooler temperatures at night are leaving trails icy or glazed. Additionally, all trails in the area are littered with tree debris due to the high winds. In summary, trails in PLPP are in spring-like condition. Grooming and tracksetting will resume when overnight lows return to seasonal normals”
