Updates: West Bragg; Sandy McNabb; Bus trip to LL

Steve is back on skis!

I was wondering where Steve Riggs had disappeared to, and with this recent comment, we now know the story. Steve, I’m sorry to hear that you had to miss three weeks of ski season but it’s nice to see you’re back:

“We headed south on Saturday to the Sandy McNabb trails, based on the official report “fair to good on most trails”. While I tend to be happy as long as there is just enough snow to ski on, and the trail report did mention some icy sections, my personal rating would be poor overall, with a minimal amount of packed recent snow over a very icy and rough base, making us really glad to be on metal edge light touring skis for the downhills.
We pulled the plug after Long Prairie loop and finished up the day at West Bragg, where conditions on the trails south of the road continue to be very enjoyable. A light snowfall at days end was freshening things up at West Bragg as we finished.
It felt great to be back on skis after 3 weeks off recovering from a sprain.”

Bus trip to Lake Louise on Sat Feb 6:

Moraine Lake Road at Lake Louise

The Calgary Ski club has room for more on the bus if you’d like to join them. Non-members are welcome. I wish I could join the fun, but I’ve volunteered to work at the World Cup in Canmore on Saturday. Hopefully it will be fun, too.

For nordic skiers, the bus will drop you off at the Chateau Lake Louise.  From there you’ll be able to access the Tramline, Fairview and Telemark trails, and from these trails the rest of the trail system in Lake Louise.  The bus will pick you up at the Chateau Lake Louise at the end of the day.

  1. Agree with the comment re. horses at Sandy McNabb ruining the experience. We went there today to ski and saw two equestrians out on the trails, plus a load of fresh manure and deep-punched horse tracks on the route we were skiing. We abandoned after less than a km and went elsewhere, as it was no fun to ski.

  2. A small group of Norseman Ski Club skiers went out to Hawk Ridge Centre today. The wind from the southeast gave us brain freeze this morning, but the snow conditions were surprisingly good. Lots of fun doing all the loops a couple of times with a very civilized warm place for lunch in between.

The tiny bit of new snow last night made all the difference as some members of our group mentioned there were icy patches a few days ago. Recommended while the snow lasts!
