Iron Springs trail at West Bragg Creek. Jan 27, 2010. Photo by Clive Cordery

Hi Bob, I was out for a ski at West Bragg Creeek this morning. It was a glorious day – bright blue sky and temperatures in the -5 to -10 range. I skied Iron Springs – Elbow Trail – Loggers and Moose Loop.
Conditions were generally excellent – most of it was trackset with the best coverage on Iron Springs – Elbow Trail. Care must be taken on Moose Loop in a few spots that could use more snow.

I had a couple hours of daylight on my way back to Canmore, so I took the detour down Hwy #40. The trails at PLPP were in great shape today. The snow temp at Boulton Creek was -12. I skied on Whiskey Jack, Pocaterra, Lynx, Amos, Wheeler. All good. That fun run down Pocaterra never lasts long enough.

Also skied on the Kananaskis Village trails – Terrace, Kovach, Ribbon Creek and while they haven’t been recently trackset, they’re in good shape. The snow is cold and the tracks are good, with some fresh snow over top.

Received this information from Sanne at Golden, BC:

The Golden Nordic Ski Club has a great weekend planned for this upcoming weekend! We are very lucky to have wonderful snow and great trackset trails. The weather is supposed to be great this weekend so come on out and enjoy the Dawn Mountain Nordic Centre trails and our small town community atmosphere.

Saturday is our Full Moon Ski with cheap pizza and beer (hot chocolate for kids) at the nearby Corks restaurant from 4-6 pm and then head on over to the Dawn Mountain trail head for some night time skiing under the full moon. Just follow the tikki lights to the cabin (about a kilometer from the trail head, straight) to enjoy a camp fire and pot luck goodies.

Sunday will be the 14th Annual Huckleberry Loppet! It is always a great community event and more skiers from the Kootenays and Canmore/Calgary are joining us for the fun. Last year we saw 92 skiers, including parents pulling their baby sleds, small children, racing youth and adults, and I believe our oldest participant was in her 80s. There is something for everyone from 1, 4, 8, 11 and 22 km – classic only. The finish is at the cabin and your entry fee will include lunch, hot drinks and medallions for all kids and all top three finishers. Also there will be lots of door prizes! Registration closes at 6 pm this Thursday (Mountain Standard Time) but there is a chance to sign up in the morning of the event from 9 – 10 am for those who missed online registrations. Mass start is at 11 am sharp.
