Victor’s last lap

Victor Daigle

Victor Daigle loves cross-country skiing. Strong, fit, and skilled, he excelled at it. In any race he entered, you could always find his name at or near the top of the results. Friendly, and quick with a smile, I originally met him when we were both members of the Calgary Ski Club.

Victor leads a group of ski friends around the Canmore Nordic Centre

I was privileged to be invited to make a lap around the nordic centre with him today. I’m unable to ski right now, but I was pleased to be there anyway, alongside about two dozen of his ski friends, to join him as he gathered all his strength to ski about 200 metres in front of the daylodge.

He asked me to remind everyone to live your life to the fullest every minute, and never miss a day of skiing. Victor has terminal lymphoma and took his skis off for the last time today.

Victor Daigle steps out of his skis for the last time

It was about the nicest day I’ve ever seen at the Canmore Nordic Centre with a cheery blue sky dotted with puffy clouds, a bright winter sun, and nice cold snow.

Dear Victor
I’ve just returned from your funeral mass, where I had a chance to bid my last ”adieu” in this realm of our earthy existence. I shall continue in French, because I would not have addressed myself otherwise to you. Tu sais qu’on a pratiquement grandit ensemble.

AFA,
Alvin…..big hug & ”high five”

And of course, to all of those who knew him for his sporting exploits and career, he lead by example and would want you to continue to share his legacy and his joy for skiing or other endeavors dear to you.

Thank you Bob,

Victor was my uncle and my favourite one as well. I am 37 yrs old and he was only 48. That made us pretty close in age. He was such a special person. You knew the “winter Victor” and I knew the “summer Victor”! You skied with him and he taught me how to catch lobster!
My husband and I were fortunate enough to stay with him and Lee for a month in November of 2004 while my husband was in university. I saw why he loved Calgary so much and he even took us to Canmore. He “loved” that place! We know why he loved it so much. It warms my heart to see how many friends he had at his “other” home. Thanks again for this beautiful write up you did on him. It made us all incredibly happy to see him like that. Maybe someday we will be fortunate enough to meet!

Thank you,

It is with great sadness that I write to tell you that Victor has “skied to the other side.” He passed away at home today with his wife, Lee, and family at 2:35pm, March 11, 2012.

He will be buried back home in New Brunswick.

He will be greatly missed and always remembered
Glenda

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft starlight at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.

Hi Cousin Victor,
Since I never skied with you, but I did some XC skiing a long time ago,
I can visualize your smile at the FRONT of the pack at all those finish lines.
My happy memories are of being on your fishing boat and other times meeting you at
the pier when you were bringing in your catch of lobster.
Sending Love and Prayers.

On pense à toi.
Bon courage à toi et ta partenaire.

Although we did not know each other well, Victor, we did share many start lines and events over the years and the love of the ski. Both my wife, Jean, and I feel so very saddened that you had your last ski but heartened by the fact that you were able to do it with so many great friends at CNC. We are sorry to have missed that day as we are on the road doing three long loppets. We applaud from afar your courage in facing the seemingly impossible situation of the times and send you our sincerest best wishes – hang in there – our prayers go with you -

Hi Victor,
Since seeing you at Worlds at Sovereign Lake a year ago, I knew the news was not good; received the link to this story via email from Roger Levesque.
I wish I could have been there to ski with you-such an act of courage and inspiration!
I think back to the old days and racing against you at Fraser cups and loppets in N.B. You were always a great guy, a real competitor, and a good skier who became a far better one when you moved out west and had some truly impressive results the past number of years.
Your many ski friends back east will be thinking of you this Sunday as we line up for the loppet at Kouchibouguac.
My thoughts and prayers are with you and Lee; feel privileged to know you all these years.

Victor today I raced the Cookie and had you in my heart and mind as I skied. I said to Yvon that I would do this one for you. Yvon said to me that if I could ski with the heart that you ski I could win the whole thing!. In my head I could hear you saying, “I’m a bit old school. If it doesn’t hurt you aren’t working enough.”
I have a long way to go on my racing, but you have left us a wonderful legacy to try to live up to. I have admired you for your down to earth style, your honesty and how you treat people. You have never been arrogant or self-centered. Just a great person and a great skier. You are an inspiration not only on the skis, but in life. I too will try to live an inspired live, just as you have. I will live what you taught us and put it in the hearts of my boys. They admire you Victor.

Keeping you and Lee in our hearts and prayers,

Some of my fondest memories are going “home” to NB for summer vacations as a kid and spending time with you and your other crazy siblings. The many homegrown “contraptions”, leaky rowboats, borrowing fish from the long gone smoke sheds, fishing on your dad’s boat, and just plain enjoying every minute of every day there. And thanks as well for opening day of lobster season on your boat with Ivan some years back. Wish you could have come here to Arizona with Nora to visit a couple years ago.
It is said the two most important days in one’s life are the day they were born and the day they figure out WHY they were born. Not all achieve the latter but I truly believe you have. So keep your jois de vie and I am confident you will find that the best part of this great adventure is yet to come.

Your loving cousin,
Ron

Even if we aren’t it touch that often, I always think and talk about you and look forward to seeing you every summer.

I would have loved to have skied with you as you have really been an inspiration in my ski days in Calgary. I will always remember your ski tips and encouragement when we trained and raced together with George and the Calgary Ski Club. Your smile and warm heart will stand out in my mind. I was telling my husband about you and training/racing together and that race at Mount Shark where we could hardly make it up the icy road! I received the notice for the ski at Canmore a day before, but what to do! We were scheduled for the ‘week-before-altitude ski’ at Lake Louise…continuous 3 hours plus,to build up that hemoglobin. Then I thought:

“What would Victor Do?”

So we trained!
I hope this honours your spirit Victor and the Lifesport Team will miss you.
The American Birkie? Well, THIS one is for you!!!

It was an honnor for me Victor to have been there for your last ski.
Now I only hope there is no global warming in heaven so when we get there we can ski all we want and who knows maybe we will be good enough to be on gods top team :) )))))
