More snow overnight

At 8 a.m. Sunday morning we have at least 5 cm of new powdery snow in Canmore and it’s still snowing lightly. My thermometer reads -6. A snowfall warning is still in effect, but as the temperature warms up today, it will probably and unfortunately turn to rain at lower elevations.

Be careful out there and give yourself some extra time on the roads this morning. I won’t be going to the Lake Louise Loppet today, but I hope we’ll get reports from a few participants.

  1. My third Lake Louise Loppet and another unique experience. Snow temperatures were around -1C at race time, the snow was falling lightly and the tracks were soft. I had quite a bit of wax angst. I was stuck with the LF7 that I applied Saturday, based on some inaccurate temperature predictions. I ended up using V45 (violet) for kick. It was useless on the lake but was okay in the trees. I look forward to seeing what some of the experts used on Sunday. Sunday’s time was my slowest in three years but I felt pretty good even though I had to move up an age class (!).

Temperatures were great for post race tales and hanging out on the lake. Unfortunately we bailed before prizes and awards because of heavy snow at the Chateau and weather warnings. Ironically the road to Calgary was in great shape.

    Thanks to the many volunteers.

  2. EXTREME avalanche danger right now in k-country so stay out of the backcountry! It’s about the same in Banff, Yoho, and Kootenay.
    Better safe then sorry!

  3. There is rain falling on the Nordic Centre web cam lens at this moment (4:55pm Sunday). And a very dedicated skier has just gone by!
