Avalanche debris on Tyrwhitt trail in Kananaskis

“Trees up to 14 in thick were broken off and tossed like matchsticks…”

We don’t usually see avalanches on the trackset trails in Kananaskis.

Kananaskis Public Safety has some photos and information about the avalanche which occurred on Tyrwhitt last weekend. Thank you to Chris for sending me the link.

I didn’t see the avalanche aftermath myself, but I’d be interested in hearing from anyone who did, with your opinion on whether this would have put a skier in danger if it had happened while skiing here. I realize the chances of being in this exact spot while the avalanche occurred are slim.

Tyrwhitt avalanche

“Large size 3.5 Avalanche occurred late in the Day Yesterday off of Mt Tyrwitt running full path taking out a good chunk of mature timber.  We are expecting many large releases this year as we head into spring….”
