I realize the risk I’m taking here. This wonderful but little-known restaurant may end up becoming overly busy, and I might have to wait a few minutes for service, but here goes.
One of my favourite hiking destinations this summer has been the 3 Sisters Market and Bistro. I walk out my back door, into the forest, and after a nice hike along the Highline trail to the eastern trailhead, I follow my nose towards the delicious aromas wafting from a couple blocks down the street.
I am soon greeted by smiling faces on the nicest patio in Canmore. There is a unique atmosphere among the customers here, with everyone being friendly and happy to say hi.
You’d be smiling, too, if you were enjoying the delectable delights prepared by Chef Anthony Rabot. You not only have the great food, but the views are spectacular, with the Three Sisters and Ship’s Prow on the southern horizon. I can look up and see the rocky outcropping at the top of Grassi Knob, my second-favourite hiking destination this summer.
They have an excellent menu which you can order from, but weekends are a special treat. If you follow them on Twitter or Facebook, you’ll get an update which gives you a preview of their upcoming weekend specials. Sometimes I stop in for a latte and apple pie. It’s apple pie like I’ve never tasted before. The lemon pie is equally tasty.
For example, here a few recent offerings:
- Weekend Specials/Greek Salad / Fish&Seafood Cassoulet/Dessert is Eton Mess(meringue with whipped cream & berries) and some very cool wines!
- Get your thirst on!/Lots of people on the patio!/Frozen Rum Punch is the cocktail of the Weekend (slushy with a kick!) and its already 24C!
- Wknd special – Seafood Chowder, Mussels Mariniere & Fries/We have some nice Belgian Beers to pair with Specials!
- Escape the crush downtown/Bistro patio is cool & shaded & relaxed/one of Anthonys cool cocktails will hit the spot!
The Seafood Chowder was far and away the best I’ve ever had the pleasure of eating.
The location is ideal if you want to pick up a quick coffee in the morning, as it’s very near the Three Sisters Parkway exit at the eastern extremity of Canmore. Perfect if you’re coming from Calgary and heading towards the Spray Lakes road.
It’s not a big place(another reason why I like it), and doesn’t have a lot of seats, so don’t inundate Anthony and his helpful staff all at once. In the summer, with the patio open, it can accommodate more people, so try and get here before the snow flies at least once.
