Choices

Did you also get excited while reading the Trip Reports yesterday? Although I wasn’t out skiing, a lot of readers were, and they found the good snow and grooming. The recent snowfall has made for a lot of new skiable trails:

  • Cascade valley, but it already has 10 cm of powder over the tracksetting of Nov 14
  • Spray river west side to Goat creek bridge. Trackset but thin.
  • Kananaskis village is groomed, not yet trackset. Tracksetter Jeff reports:“Ribbon Creek area received close to 30 cm of new snow since Tuesday Nov 20. All the trails around the Village were packed and groomed today with a base ranging from 5cm to 8cm. Skiing is possible but be aware of rocks and twigs and a few small icy sections from earlier rains. The upper Skogan Pass trails have up to 50cm of new snow with no grooming yet.”
  • Mt Shark’s red, yellow, purple and black trails were groomed, and the blue loop was trackset. This is in addition to Watridge Lake road which was already skiable
  • PLPP has a number of trails which have been snowmobile packed.
  • Lake Louise has more trails opening up such as Peyto and Telemark. This is in addition to Moraine Lake road and Great Divide which are already in fabulous condition.

I would expect to see the Elk Pass, Blueberry, Patterson, and Hydroline all trackset today, and perhaps some grooming on Lookout, Whiskey Jack and Tyrwhitt.

The Banff tracksetter may also be working on another trail somewhere in the park. Will he re-do Cascade, or perhaps venture over to Redearth creek?

An enviable early-season dilemma: with so many choices, where do I ski today?

  1. Bob… you have a great way of packaging the available information!
Now that the Cascade has been trackset again, for those looking to choose powder and solitude, another great choice exists:
LAKE O’HARA is a beautiful tour. We even flushed out this Ptarmigan along the trail today:
