Thieves at Elk Pass

This is unfortunate, and I hope we can help Lori catch the perpetrators. Let’s all be on the lookout for any suspicious behavior at the trailheads.

Hi Bob,

We enjoyed a fantastic ski and snowshoe day with our two kids at Elk Pass, Fox Creek and Boultan Creek today. I switched to snowshoes at 2:20 and went with my daughter on the Elk Pass snowshoe trail for quick powder pounce while my husband did a quick ski with my son, before returning to our car at 2:45. While changing gear at 2:20 we accidentally left out camera in our trunk (I NEVER leave valuables in the car, but was distracted and forgot it) and realized when we got home that it was gone. Someone broke into our car between 2:20-2:45 at the Elk Pass trailhead and stole our Panasonic Lumix camera from the trunk. There were lots of skiers in the parking lot at that time and I wonder if perhaps anyone saw anything suspicious. Our car was on the north side, close to the the bathrooms; a red Corolla with a roof rack. If you are able to post this message, perhaps one of your readers might know something that I could pass on to the RCMP. If we could catch these people it would be much better for all trail users.

After such a fantastic day it is so upsetting to learn thieves are lurking in the parking areas, watching for opportunity.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Cheers, Lori

  1. Hey Lori. Tim and I bumped into you right around that time and went straight back to the car along fox creek, not 15 min later. The parking lot was packed and busy with people coming and going. Would have to be some brazen thieves to break into your car with all those people there.

  2. Sort of sounds strange as the thieves that used to work those parking lots would break in with little damage to the vehicle and steal credit cards out of wallets but leave the cash so as not to arouse any suspicion. They would then try to run up the credit card before it was shut down. This happened to a couple of people I know. When I go to K-Country I take only my drivers licence, a credit card and a few $$ bills that easily fit in my small pack. One thing to remember is locks are only to keep honest people honest, shame.
