This blog has teamed up with Lifesport to offer support for a promising young ski racer, Joelle Sevigny. Here’s her second report of the season:
The racing season has officially started! This past weekend was Alberta Cup 1 and 2 in Canmore, which were also part of the Haywood NorAm Series. It was the first race of the year for me and I went there not expecting much. However, I did very well for my first time racing in the Junior Girl category and placed second in the 5 km skate mass start as well as second in the 5 km classic interval start. I guess all those kilometres in Lake Louise I have been doing in the past month are paying off!
The races this weekend were pretty hard as they were located on the World Cup courses. The race format changed a bit from when I was a Juvenile; I now go further and I have more hills. Nevertheless, I wasn’t the only one moving up to Junior Girls and all of us in this category were very supportive of each other. I can’t say I felt super racing on that hilly course but I didn’t feel awful either. However, now that I’ve survived this weekend, I think I’m ready for anything else they will throw at me this season.
Great thanks to Bob Truman, Norm at Lifesport and to Swix. With the new wax I was generously given, I had amazing fast skis and was flying down those crazy hills at the Nordic Centre! I also felt pretty fashionable in my new Swix race suit and Craft warm-up jacket.
Coming up next is the 2nd Haywood NorAm competitions in Sovereign Lake, Vernon. I will be leaving Wednesday with the rest of my teammates from Foothills Nordic. We are staying up there for about a week where we will also enjoy the superb trail system of Silverstar.
In the meantime I will continue to have fun, train hard and stay healthy!
Cheers!
Joelle Sevigny
