Skiing starts this weekend at Canmore

Yes, I know it’s mid-October with daytime highs in excess of +10°C,  but your eyes don’t deceive you. The prologue to this year’s ski season starts on Saturday Oct 18 at the Canmore Nordic Centre. Expectations are that we’ll have 2K of trails to ski on.

The birth of Frozen Thunder

Snow which was stored all summer in a big pit at the nordic centre is in the process of being trucked onto the trails. The snow cat will smooth it out and create a corduroy surface for skating and classic skiing, and if the nights are cold enough, it will be trackset as well.

Passes are required to ski on Frozen Thunder. You can buy a single day pass, or a Frozen Thunder pass. Check this special page which I’ve set up for the CNC to get more details on the fees and times: Canmore Nordic Centre page. Listed below are the fees for day passes:

Day Passes – purchase at the outside ticket window

Adult                                      $10.00
Senior                                    $7.50
Junior                                     $7.50
Child                                      $6.00

Starting on Saturday, this snow will be used by skiers from all over North America

Waxing tips for Frozen Thunder

With the warm temperatures, it will be difficult to get any grip on your classic skis with normal hard wax. Come prepared with waxless skis or the dreaded klister. You can avoid any grip problems by using skate skis. Experience tells me that by by noon, the snow will be getting slushy.

This is year six for Frozen Thunder, and I’ve written dozens of articles in the past, so if you want more details about this amazing phenomenon, you can check my older posts here Frozen Thunder archive.
