Saturday morning update

Here in Canmore, it doesn’t look very pleasant outside. Temperature is -20°C but there’s also a wind to make it even colder. Environment Canada lists the wind chill at -28. We received 3 cm of snow overnight.

Last night in PLPP, the entire length of Pocaterra was trackset. Packers was partially trackset, but there’s a cautionary note on the trail report: “Packers – not fully trackset due to areas of thin snow and other early season hazards. Use caution, particularly on descent (East to West).”

The PLPP Visitor Centre webcam shows the temperature at -16, which in reality is probably closer to -20. Before you head out, check the webcams for road conditions.

Lake Louise skiers

If you’re planning on skiing at Lake Louise between Jan 5 – 15, please read the notice which I’ve posted at the right. The first race of the 2015 Westerns on January 15th will be an Open/Masters race on the proposed course for the Ski Tour Canada 2016 in Lake Louise.

Anyone can enter the Lake Louise race. I see lots of masters are on the confirmation list. For more info Alberta World Cup Society

Parks Canada has additional information posted here: Haywood NorAm 2015 Western Canadian Cross Country Ski Championships

Nipika Loppet 2015Loppet season

Nipika Mountain Resort has an upcoming classic loppet on Jan 31, and a skating race the next day. They have good snow conditions now, and  the latest report states, “Trails [ 50 kms ]  are  groomed for classic & skate skiing. The skiing is spectacular.” Register at Zone 4. On the main menu, I have a Loppets page listed.

A new record

We got the new year started on the right foot by setting another record for visitors to this blog on Jan 1 with 5692. When I started this blog in 2008 – 2009, I was elated when it received 100 visits in a day. A good portion of those 5692 skiers were on the trails at the Canmore Nordic Centre yesterday.

  1. Oops — “For now, I can say that there will be NO GROOMING tomorrow (January 5)” …. sorry…. should read NO TRAIL CLOSURES tomorrow (January 5).

Normal grooming by Chateau and/or Parks Canada may of course take place.

  2. Re Lake Louise trails, any way we can get notice of the “occasional closures” before driving out there?

    • Re “Re Lake Louise trails, any way we can get notice of the “occasional closures” before driving out there?”

Can’t promise 100% accuracy, but we’ll try to post at SkiHere and on our web page our plans for the next day – posting around 5:00 PM each day for the following day.

For now, I can say that there will be NO GROOMING tomorrow (January 5) as we will be moving the grooming machine from Kananaskis.

      • It sounds like a great project Ken. I hope that lots of Skier Bob blog readers come out to watch or participate.

I wish you all the best and I hope that you get all the snow you need.
