The weekend ahead

-A remote camera image shows a cougar using the Bow Valley Parkway during an overnight closure last spring-

It snowed about 1 cm in Canmore last night. It’s cold and a bit breezy this morning, not used to this!

It’s been a while since any grooming occurred at Mt Shark, but the Live Grooming Report indicates that all the trails including Watridge Lake Road to the Spray River were trackset last night. Does anyone know if the dogsleds are still using this trail?

Canmore Nordic Centre

The IBU Cup biathlon event is happening at the Canmore Nordic Centre this weekend. Recreational trails remain open to the public, but be prepared for lots of vehicles in the parking lots. We’ve received a couple more cm since this report from Peter, so conditions should be even better:

“Nordic Centre was bit better than you might expect yesterday. Groomers did what was possible with the trace amounts of new snow. Meadowview was trackset in both directions from the mine scar. On some stretches there just wasn’t enough snow for a track of any depth, and there were icy patches. Trails directly above the day lodge (Centennial and Olympic) were in very good condition due to their deep base of artificial snow. VR45 (-2/-8) aka purple was the “safe” wax of choice; VR40 (-4/-12) aka blue worked with good technique and firm pole plants. Conditions that were less than ideal for classic were fine for skating: slightly icy and fast.”

The Lake Louise Loppet is a go for Sunday. You can still register on Sunday morning if you get there early. Depending on which forecast you believe, Weather Network or AccuWeather, the forecast high on Sunday for LL is -6 or -3 after a low of -25 or -17 on Saturday night.

  1. Hi Everyone,
There were no dogs out at Mt. Shark on Wednesday February 25th. We skied the ungroomed trails and even found some powder on the ‘blue’ loop hills! Thanks to Jody I am looking forward to skiing there again this upcoming Monday.

  2. The rest of the trails at Mt Shark were also groomed overnight- the track is a little thin in places due to the icy base, and there a few icy patches as well but conditions generally looked pretty good. It did not look like the dog sledders had been to Shark in at least a few days but I think they could show up at any time.

    Happy Trails…

    • Thanks for the report. When I first looked, only Watridge Lake Road was being shown in green, but I see all of them are green now.
