Good-bye 2015

Emerald Lake Lodge contest entry from Dan Z

Emerald Lake Lodge contest entry from Dan Z: “Annual Bryant ski trip, another famous shirts off pose.”

It’s another cold morning at -16°C here in Canmore, but the effects of the chinook should be evident later today.

PLPP web cam Dec 31Higher elevations will probably be much warmer, so ski to the Skogan summit or Kananaskis Fire Lookout for the nicest temperatures. If you don’t know already, the temperature on the PLPP web cam is unreliable when the sun is shining. Before the sun was up today, the temperature reading was -19.5°C.

The weather forecasts are very divergent in their predictions for the next few days, but at all times Helen Read’s advice should be followed “If we learned anything last year, ya gotta grab the snow while it’s good.”

We’ve had one of the best ever starts to the ski season. There were a few hiccups with some wind and rain, but immediately followed by fresh snow and cold weather to freshen up the trails again.

I’ve been wondering how Seraina made out with her duct-taped skis yesterday. I hope someone can give me an update.

The photo at the top was the final entry in the Emerald Lake Lodge contest. We’ll be drawing the winner’s name within the next 7 days.

  1. I hope Dan Z has his spots booked already for this year’s trip to Bryant. I tried to book an evening Jan.23rd yesterday and one single person had beet me to the punch and booked every available spot for every Saturday for all of January and February of this year. Weekends are not available this season. Better look elsewhere.

    • Hey Willie, unfortunate Bryant is booked solid the next while. Who wants to stay in a hut full of strangers anyways! Plenty of other more remote huts out there! I was at Bryant a few weeks ago when I took that photo above. Key to getting a spot is skiing in Fri night, arriving at 1am and busting out a keg of beer for a hut full of friends. We’ve been skiing in there Fri nights for years & it’s superb under full moon. Lots of Wolverine tracks along the way & a bull Moose hanging out by cabin in the morn’ before we set out across Marvel Lake.
