Lots of snow at Lake Louise

It appears the only recent tracksetting in Lake Louise is that which was completed by Chateau tracksetter Jeff Douglas which you can read on the Groomer’s Reports.

Yesterday(Wed Mar 2) I skied on Fairview and Upper Tramline in excellent conditions. Fairview had the purest, cleanest, cold-enough snow that I’ve seen since this warm weather hit us six weeks ago.

What Jeff’s report doesn’t state is that Moraine Lake road was trackset for the first 1.7K which allowed me to complete the entire Fairview loop on fresh tracksetting. MLR only had an outbound and an inbound lane trackset, the skate lane was not groomed. There’s about 8 – 10 cm of fresh snow in the skating lane.

Moraine Lake road had skier tracks beyond the Fairview junction in the fresh snow which were quite good.

Air temperature in the late afternoon at MLR trailhead was +2°C. I already had my skintecs out, but a skier who had just finished told me she was using VR45(-2/-8) with success. I exchanged skis and tried it with VR45 but ended up rewaxing with VR50(0/-4) and it worked perfectly.

It never fails. Two people walked in the soft snow on Tramline, one of them in the tracks, making deep imprints. I fail to understand how anyone can even enjoy walking in such soft snow in their street boots. There’s a sign at the Tramline trailhead saying CROSS COUNTRY SKIING ONLY. NO WALKING NO SNOWSHOEING NO DOGS.

The Great Divide had no recent tracksetting but had skier tracks in 8 cm of fresh snow.

The Lake Louise loppet is this Sunday and the Weather Network forecast is showing a low of -5 on Saturday night with a high of +1 on Sunday with some fresh snow. It’s difficult to make any predictions yet on exactly what wax you’ll require at race time.

Talk about a once-in-a-lifetime sighting. Lucky Chuck, seeing a real live, wild wolverine on his ski trip. Check the trip reports to read his report and see the photos.

The Kicking Horse Ski Club in Yoho sent this update yesterday: “Finally — some nice fresh snow–about 4-5? and Hans came out this afternoon and set the tracks at the lake. He did not do the full loop on the lake as it was getting a bit warm again. Joe is scheduled to do the Connector and all valley trails tomorrow!”

Just a reminder if you’re heading to West Bragg Creek this weekend, there will be some parking restrictions. See below:

  1. Last Friday, I noticed a set of footprints all the way down Tramline and then back up, with one foot always in the ski track. Sounds like it’s a regular user – maybe a runner? Seems like a defiant act of entitlement.

  2. With the Chateau’s international appeal those signs could be in multiple languages really. Would probably help alot.
