I received this email and these photos from Les…
We snowshoed up to Helen Lake on Saturday. 8” of snow in the parking lot, soon changed to 1.5 feet on the trail and 3 feet the last 1.5 kms to the lake. What a day.
On another note, I wanted to contact you about “access to Prov of Alberta” weather stations. About 3 years ago I found out we had 5 or 6 brand new weather stations down the Spray Lake Road. I contacted Alberta Parks and they said they are having trouble persuading others to open up the links for the public to see the weather stations data. I contacted them last winter and the same story. It would be great to have them listed like the Banff stations are listed on avalanche.ca.
As you know, so many times we leave Canmore thinking PLPP weather is – 12 deg, only to find it a cool –22 deg C.
Thoughts on how to proceed to get access to this weather stations data?
Thanks

Good morning. I just got off the phone with Kananaskis Parks. They hope to have weather stations like Mud Lake and Burstall posted to Avalanche.ca or made available to them by mid Dec, 2016 (this year). They have also been working through the hoops for several years on this. He will also look into who owns and manages the weather station on Tent Ridge. Great progress I think.

Just spit-ballin’ here but doesn’t one of them belong to the U of S as a research project? Seemed to recall talking briefly with some skiers heading up somewhere near Skogan…few years back now. Snow pack maynb?
I know that the Spray Lakes Road weather stations are not live yet, but this website has the best live weather station information I have found to date.

It takes a little bit to get used to the operation, but once you have it, it is pretty quick and easy.
Thanks. I’ve added the link to the weather menu. -Bob
Les, did you forget your skis? 😉
About those weather stations- I’ve bugged K-Country 3-4 times in the last 2 years about access, after they announced these new weather stations nearly 3 years ago, at the time saying that the data would be available publicly, live online, “soon”. Especially where avalanche safety is involved- knowledge is power. The one reply that I did get went something like “network issues”.
BS, how hard can it be?
Thanks for the reminder, I’m going to try again to get an answer. Perhaps a concerted effort is needed.
