SkiNationals at Canmore Nordic Centre

-Alec MacLean and Jessica Roach from Hardwood Hills ski club in Ontario were getting in some practice at Canmore Nordic Centre today-

Watch for Alec MacLean’s and Jessica Roach’s names at the top of the results in the upcoming Canadian ski championships Mar 18-25 at CNC. They will both be competing in the Relay Cross to kick things off on Saturday. Alec and Jessica are from Hardwood Hills ski club in Ontario.

Trail closures at CNC during the SkiNationals:

Closures will include Olympic, Centennial, King of Sweden, Osprey and parts of Meadowview and Coyote.

Expect the parking lot to be congested during this time. We highly recommend taking Roam Transit on the weekend.

“Beautiful and Fun” – Paul and Nancy on the trip reports

If someone had told me yesterday, while it was pouring rain in Canmore, that I’d be skiing at the nordic centre today and enjoying it, I’d have said you were crazy.

Great conditions on Meadowview

The 14 cm of snow we received last night has really saved the day. If you were out early enough, as Paul and Nancy were, you could have even used wax. After shoveling my way out of here, I was resigned to using my Skintecs this afternoon.

I did the Banff Trail loop to start things off and the conditions were quite variable. I experienced semi-glazed tracks in shaded areas which were very fast, to some sun-exposed spots which were wet but still firm, and a little slower. Skaters were having a good time on a firm base.

You can see how much new snow is on the ungroomed trail known as King of Sweden. This is one of the trails which will be closed during the SkiNationals.

I then made the big climb up Olympic to the Meadowview trail and experienced great conditions on the natural snow. I probably could have been using wax.

Returning on Banff Trail, Grey Wolf(wonderful!), and Bow was excellent and enjoyable.

I’d have to say the natural snow trails were in a lot better condition than the man-made snow on the Banff Trail loop. The further I skied from the daylodge, the nicer it was.

I saw lots of rolled-up fencing at many junctions, ready to be used during the SkiNationals, and other indications of the upcoming races.

The air temperature at 3 pm was +1°C. It was mostly sunny while I skied this afternoon, but for about 15 minutes, while I was climbing the Olympic trail up to Meadowview, another front rolled through and dropped a skiff of new snow on the trails.

I have official word that Shaganappi and Confederation Golf Courses are closed to skiing. I’ve posted an update re: Shaganappi on the Groomer’s Reports.
