Exciting news! Trails are being groomed

Remarks to go with the above map: “A nice early season snowfall has blanketed most of the area. 10-20cm so far with more on the way. Recent grooming is groomed and packed only. Packed base averages between 2 to 4 cm with lots of exposed needles and some dirt. Skiing is possible on gentle trails caution advised on any downhills.”

Update from Tracksetter Jeff:

Hi Folks,
Sorry to throw needles on the grooming report but the trails are only groomed no tracksetting yet. The base is still very thin with lots of skid marks and branches poking through. The snow ranges in depth from 10 cm down low to over 20 cm at the top of Coalmine, I’d wait until more snow arrives hopefully tomorrow’s forecast holds true before venturing out on skis.

I love skiing these trails. Terrace, Kovach, Aspen were the site of my first ever ski adventure 20 years ago. Old Ribbon Creek was the perfect beginner trail, but as we know, most of it was destroyed in the 2013 floods.

It’s great to see all the green on this report. There’s still a snowfall warning out for Kananaskis so I expect today’s grooming will have fresh snow on it by tomorrow, but more snow at this time of year is all good, as it will cover those remaining thin spots, needles and dirt.  The cold weather will preserve this windfall and enable us to use waxable skis.

On the TV weather, they said the heaviest snow was yet to come and would probably start at 7 a.m. tomorrow.

If you want to follow Tracksetter Jeff’s progress in the future, there’s a link on the menu entitled “Live Grooming.” Click on Ribbon Creek/Kananaskis Village.

Snowfall predictions for Kananaskis:

Environment Canada: Tonight Snow at times heavy. Amount 10 cm. Low minus 18. A further 2-4 cm on Friday.

Weather Network: Tonight 2-6 cm. Friday 1 cm.

Snow Forecast: Tonight 7 cm. Friday 2 cm.

Ventusky: Tonight 2 cm. Friday 5 cm.

  2. Bob- this afternoon I got a 2nd hand ‘rumor’ that 1A and moraine were packed. I can’t get confirmation. Maybe you will have more luck!

Great news if it’s true! How well do you trust your sources? Let’s wait to hear from Chuck. That’s his territory. -Bob
