Update 9:50 a.m from Adam in Peter Lougheed Prov Park:

Update from PLPP: As of 9:30, it is snowing with 4 cm of new snow on the ground at the visitor centre; temperature is -1°C. Highway 40 is in rough shape, though we met two plows working to clear it on our way down this morning.

It appears to be snowing in Lake Louise this morning.

Most of the trails in the south end of PLPP were trackset last night including Elk Pass, Blueberry Hill, Tyrwhitt, Lookout, Hydroline and Patterson. It was snowing, so the new grooming will already have fresh snow on top.

Yoho Valley Road was trackset yesterday.

We received no snow in Canmore and the temperature at 8:30 a.m. is +1. According to reports on Bow Valley Road Conditions, freezing rain has made the roads very slippery and vehicles are in the ditch between Canmore and Banff.

The Canmore Nordic Centre also posted a notice this morning:

“All Ski trails have ice from last nights freezing rain. Please use caution on Natural snow Trails as there remains natural hazards and some thin snow covered areas.”

As we heard from Andrew Osinski’s report, conditions at Nipika are excellent. You only have eight days to register for the Nipika loppet which is held on Jan 27, 28.

Every winter Alf comes up with a very funny dog story from West Bragg Creek. Here is the report from yesterday:

But that is not my dog!

About 2pm I was chatting with a woman who lost her dog, while hiking at West Bragg Creek.  It’s a husky and it ran after something in the woods at noon.

At around 5pm, I returned to the parking lot to find one of the GBCTA volunteers  standing near the Braggin Rights trailhead, holding onto a dog.  That seemed odd to me, since he is not a dog owner.  His Pink Panther explanation was “But that is not my dog”.  Apparently the missing husky had made his way back to the parking lot after what he probably thought of as his “best day ever!”. The volunteer had leashed the dog and had been looking after it since it showed up at the parking lot.  The woman’s husband had apparently gone out to search the trails before the dog got back, so now we were just waiting for him to return.

Eventually, at about 6pm, dog and owner were re-united. Happy ending.

Here’s last year’s dog tale from Alf But that is not my dog!
