Maple Ridge alert

In this exchange between Manfred and the city, they mostly ignored his concern. Does this raise more suspicion of their intentions?

Hi Bob,

I emailed the City regarding Maple Ridge golf course, as a couple of trip reports mentioned that the grooming of xc ski trails there is in jeopardy.

Below is the response sent to me by the city. They didn’t address my concern but provided info none the less.  -Manfred

Reply from the city:

“Thank you for taking the time to share your concerns regarding cross country skiing at Maple Ridge golf course.

Maple Ridge golf course continues to be an important facility in south Calgary utilized during the winter by cross country skiing enthusiasts.

While the tracks are maintained by Calgary Parks and  are usually set on Tuesdays, Parks is currently working to repair a specialized piece of equipment needed to maintain the tracks.”

Information on the website will be updated as it becomes available http://www.calgary.ca/CSPS/Parks/Pages/Locations/Cross-country-skiing.aspx

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

  1. The city’s answer makes no sense. If the city wasn’t planning on a grooming cutback, why wouldn’t they just say so? For the city employee responsible for this to completely fail to address Manfred’s question seems very puzzling(well, not really. It’s city bureaucracy at its worst). Obviously the employee has been given this canned answer to reply to all inquiries regardless of how irrelevant it is to the question.

  2. I totally agree with you, Erika!

  3. Hi:
It sounds to me like the snowmobile (or what have you) broke down, and in typical City fashion it’s taking a while to repair. I love my after work weekday workouts (how’s that for alliteration?), so hop to it, Nenshi and Co.
Have a great weekend. Off to WBC tomorrow for the first time this year. Yay!
    With kind regards,
    Herb

  4. I specifically asked if ski grooming would be discontinued at Maple Ridge due to low user numbers and/or budget cuts. The person responding, one would think, should have knowledge of the answer considering her title.

  5. “Does this raise more suspicion of their intentions?” Um…. have you considered rather than guess and worry (& assuming conspiracy?), that perhaps we should call and press 311, or city councillors for clarity/an actual response. It could be that the person responding is simply unaware of the concerns of closure (especially if this is not in the works by the city).

    • If Manfred sent an email asking about the possible end of grooming, it only makes sense that the city would refer the question to someone who isn’t aware of the concern. 🙂

      • We can take this discussion offline if you like, but I don’t understand why “it would only make sense”.

        • It was sarcasm. The smiley face should be a clue. Governments are inefficient and do stupid things like replying to a question without addressing the concern, so yes, it only makes sense they would do this. You could very well be correct in thinking the person responsible for this department didn’t have a clue about the situation. Should we expect more?
