Snowing heavily at Ribbon Creek

Sun Dec 20 at 8:47 a.m. from MK…

“It’s -4 degrees C and 12 cm of snow has accumulated at the Peter Lougheed Discovery Centre. Highway 40 is one lane and has not been plowed recently. Not currently snowing in PLPP.”

Sun Dec 20 at 8:07 a.m: Thanks to MaSid for this early morning report…

“Hwy 1 icy approaching Kananaskis turn off. 1 accident east of there. Ramp to 40 very icy too. 2 inches of fresh at barrier info, 3 inches at ribbon and puking snow at -0.5 degrees.”

The usual Saturday night grooming occurred in PLPP but you can expect all trails to be covered with lots of fresh snow. Trackset last night: Whiskey Jack, Tyrwhitt, Upper Pocaterra, and Packers.

Lake Louise: The Parks Canada trail report indicates 14 cm of overnight snow on all the trails.

Mud Lake weather station(near Chester Lake) shows a 16 cm increase in the snow pack overnight, so expect lots of fresh snow at Mt Shark.

This is just the appetizer, folks. The weather forecasts are predicting the main event to happen on Monday with a much larger snowfall.

  1. Tried to salvage the day with an optimistic ski at ribbon instead of driving down to PLPP, but sticky wet snow (good snowman stuff) and no real base, so opted to head home. Once the rest falls and groomed however…..

It’s too bad they don’t get plowing earlier, especially when days are short (and user fees). The couple of hills along the lakes trail were probably difficult travel unplowed, even with snow tires.
