  1. I am amazed and astonished that you are still grooming at PLPP!!!

Will you really groom in the rain tonight, though? Would it not be better to groom Sunday night after some snow falls 😉

  2. To the Mt. Shark Groomers – Thanks for doing such a great job this year! We may not see you, but we do think about you. We really appreciate all of the great tracks you have set this year. We skied the 15 km loop yesterday and really enjoyed it. It would be great to do with cold snow if you could get it done earlier next year.

  3. West Bragg Creek Mar 31 update from Groomer Bill:

“The following West Bragg Creek trails have been trackset: East and West Crystal line, Sundog, Loggers, Mountain View, Mountain Road to Mountain View, Moose Connector, Moose Loop and Hostel Loop. Conditions are awesome!
The ice flow on Moose Loop is covered up and in good shape.
Be aware of ice (water) flow on the Sundog hill.

Parking lot was about half full in the afternoon.”

  20. Mar 2 West Bragg Creek update from GBCTA Groomer Jeff:

    Snowmaggedon!!

Even with the grooming crew out in full force today we have been outpaced by the snow. We’ve had over 20 cm in the last 24 hrs!

All trails have been roller packed and all the core trails have been track set. That being said, I would expect that most of the tracks will be obliterated by new snow within the next 12 hrs, so we’ll start the process all over again.

Expect very soft conditions out there for the next two days. Also expect to see about 150 athletes from 4 provinces competing in the Alberta Youth Championships. They will be racing on West Crystal Line, so be sure to cheer them on!

Racing will take place all weekend, as will grooming operations, so expect to see equipment out on the trails.

Have fun out there, it is a winter wonderland!!

  26. Feb 18 West Bragg Creek update from GBCTA Groomer Jeff:

What a month! More snow last night meant great ski conditions in West Bragg!

Your grooming team put in an epic day today with about 26 hrs of grooming! Erik our resident groomer/mechanic also put in a full day trouble shooting equipment maintenance.

The following trails have been groomed and track set today:

Elbow North, Iron Springs N, Iron Creek, East & West Crystal & Links, Sundog, Loggers, Mountain View, Mountain View West, Mountain Road, Moose Connector and Loop, Hostel
Meadow and Loop, East and West Telephone. Be aware of ice flows on East and West Telephone, West Moose loop, and West Crystal at base of hill just west of Link 4.

It should be a great week of skiing. Get out and enjoy, and show some love for the trails by donating $. Our operations are completely funded by donors!

  27. Heads up for all the skiers for Saturday. Within hours of finishing all of our track setting it started snowing heavily tonight. Not sure what the accumulation will be, but I would not be considering a skate ski tomorrow. Classic skiing would certainly be a safer call, as we won’t be able to get everything re-groomed before the crowds arrive. It’s a winter wonderland out there and snow is forecast to keep coming right through Saturday evening. Have fun out there!!

Note: This is Groomer Jeff from West Bragg Creek. In case you hadn’t noticed, most groomers are named Jeff. -Bob

  28. Feb 15 West Bragg Creek update from GBCTA groomer Jeff:

    Hello All,

What a stretch we’ve had! Another 5-10 cm of new snow yesterday makes for a total of over 30 cm in the last week. Groomers have been working feverishly to get the whole system groomed and track set for the weekend.

Our colleagues at Parks have graciously track set Iron Springs South and Elbow South today. This means that for the second weekend in a row, we will have 65 km of ski trail freshly groomed within 48 hrs of a snow event.

Get out and enjoy it, conditions are fantastic out there!

  29. Feb 15 update on the Yoho and Emerald lake trails from Kicking Horse Ski Club:

The Lake Louise Track Setters lent us a sled today–even delivered it–Thank you so much.!!! Joe was able to groom out all the Kicking Horse and Tally Ho with beautiful wide corduroy! Tomorrow he will groom out the Connector and Emerald Lake while Bruce and I go retrieve our own sled in Golden–so he can then put a beautiful track on the groomed trails and have it ready for Saturday’s Ski Challenge. The wiring on the Parks sled did not match up to our track setting hydraulics but it did work to do the corduroy! Thank goodness for such good neighbours –Parks Canada and the Lake Louise winter Trail Crew. Come out for the Challenge–the trails will be wonderful. Ski ya later eh?

We will attempt to lay new tracks on other trails, but it takes time, as numerous passes are required to break up the icy troughs.

For now Classic skiing is best suited to West Crystal Line, its links, and Loggers. Mountain Road has defined tracks but they are quite icy on the East end.

Skate skiing on the other hand is fantastic right now. Mountain Road to the Mountain View intersection, West and East Crystal Line and Sundog are all very fun to ski.

Keep in mind conditions can change quickly and exercise caution, especially on hills.

    Dogs… Off-leash area sign

There have been numerous inquiries regarding the very misleading signage related to dogs needing to be on leash ‘in the Rec area’.

This actually refers to the Provincial Recreation Area or PRA which is a small area that surrounds the parking lot. Once your dog is outside the actual PRA it is allowed to be off leash.

Look for signage that defines the PRA perimeter.

  46. Jan 20 second update from Kicking Horse Ski Club:

Kicking Horse got track set today and the Tally-Ho and also the Connector–with this new snow–it is much better–but please be cautious on any hill!!!! Still some soft pole plants and twig/branches to trip you!!! Enjoy!

  47. Jan 20 update from Kicking Horse Ski Club:

Emerald Lake. Joe set tracks there yesterday–but not on the slushy lake! He’s planning on doing Field /Tally Ho/ Kicking Horse trail today–possibly a needed pass on the Connector now that we go some good snow–if he has time??

  48. Conditions virtually the same as our last report.
Classic tracks are generally icy throughout. Numerous trails should be avoided as they are hard and icy. These include Hostel Loop, Elbow Trail, Telephone, and Mountain View. Not recommended.
We did spend quite a bit of time renovating the classic tracks on Loggers on Jan. 19, 2018 with some success. They may be shallow in some areas however.
Without hydraulic tilling equipment, renovation of classic tracks is extremely difficult and time consuming, so please be patient in your expectations.
Skate Lanes on the other hand are in good shape. All have been renovated as of Jan.19, 2018. This includes core trails: East and West Crystal Lines, Sundog, Chickadee, Mountain Road, and Hostel Meadow. Caution should still be exercised on hills.

  54. Jan 11 update from Kicking Horse Ski Club re: Emerald Lake

Our track setter worked the trails today and had much trouble with water flooding over the ice at the back end of the lake! Please be adviced that skiers should only use the short section to avoid the avalanche area — and stay on shore–and NOT ski on the ice to the back!! They will run into water and slush if they do. Thank you, Marilyn KHSC

  64. Shaganappi Update from Alasdair Fergusson of the Calgary Ski Club:

    Hi fellow keen XC skiers,

7K of trails groomed and trackset for classic and skating.

Santa was very good to Calgary XC skiers this Christmas with his Christmas present of great snow – 20 cm depth off trail and 10 cm compacted depth on trail measured Saturday at Shaganappi.
But cold and with a strong wind at times – so bundle up!

And also from Santa – facilities of toilets and a warming hut thanks to fundraising by Calgary Ski Club volunteers.
But – Snowmaking on 2 km of trails has been delayed due to both weather and delays in delivery of equipment.

PLEASE NOTE: We have a terrible vandalism problem at Shaganappi – so many cut ropes that fence off sensitive golf course areas or bunkers that are dangerous to skiers at the bottom of hills.
In many cases every length of rope between our metal stakes has been cut, sometimes into short lengths.
It is disgusting and will take a lot of volunteer effort to repair until the next vandals strike.

WE ASK ALL SKIERS TO RESPECT THE FENCED AREAS DESPITE THE CUT ROPES AND NOT SKI OR SNOWSHOE ON THESE SENSITIVE AREAS TO PROTECT THE UNDERLYING VALUABLE TURF, OR FOR SKIER SAFETY.
Golf Course photos show that the icy tracks of skis or snowshoes delay melt and grass growth in spring – So please assist the Calgary Ski Club volunteers in maintaining availability of this wonderful asset for skiing.

Also there have been many break-ins to the golf course maintenance building and theft of tools.

The good news is that with Calgary Ski Club fundraising we have 2 benefits for skiing:
    1. We have rented 2 Porta-Potties for public use on the north side of the Golf Clubhouse. Hopefully these survive the vandalism.
    2. We have rented an ATCO Trailer for use as a Warming Hut for special groups such as school groups, Special Olympics, Club groups.
Due to our concerns re vandalism and theft, The ATCO will be padlocked at all times BUT the key will be supplied to trusted groups together with the key to the heated indoor washrooms, as we have done for many years ON CONDITION that the group leader inspects and cleans the facility before returning the key to me.
We are waiting to connect the ATCO to the electric power supply and also the supply of propane heating – hopefully soon after the holiday.

Enjoy XC skiing at your City-Centre Golf Course with LRT Station 200 metres from trail head and abundant on-site asphalt parking.

  65. Yoho update from Marilyn at the Kicking Horse Ski Club:

Update Dec 25 @ 11:30 a.m: “Merry Christmas everyone–the bridge got repaired by Santa and the elf! Enjoy your day skiing!”

With ever changing weather conditions–the bridge at the top of the Alluvial Fan(skiing clockwise) has flooded over! Do not cross it! We suggest going counter clockwise to the back of the fan and returning the same way.
Trails were refreshed 2 days ago at Emerald–including the TREE HUGGER trail near shore. Tally-Ho and Kicking Horse trail refreshed yesterday. Were in good shape except for that IMPASSIBLE BRIDGE!
    Merry Christmas everyone!

  66. Just pulled up Lake O’hara site to find out when it is opening for the season and read this good news:
    Latest News Dec 21
Freshly Groomed this morning in time for the Holidays.

  67. Greetings all,
Another 15 cm of snow overnight was a welcome addition to what we received 48 hrs ago. The base is setting up nicely and the following trails have been groomed and track set:
East and West Crystal lines including Links, Sundog, Loggerss, Hostel Meadow and Loop, Chickadee, and Bunny
The following have been roller packed:
Mountain Road, Iron Springs, Elbow, Mountain View.
Conditions are quite good on the groomed trails.
    Enjoy!

  68. Yoho update from Marilyn at the Kicking Horse Ski Club:

We’re good for snow and clear skies on our trails and the track setter guy has been keeping up with it really well.
On the heals of our best snowfall in weeks, Joe has made tracks on the Tally-Ho, Kicking Horse Fire Road, Yoho Valley Road and all of Emerald Lake –except for the Tree Hugger(shore) Trail which is just skidoo packed.
We have lots to ski over the next while and lot’s to be THANKFUL for. Happy Christmas skiers and snowshoers!!

It was a pleasure skiing back on Fairview later on that wide flat groomed trail.

  83. Nov 29 Report from the Heritage Guides at Lake Louise:

    Hi All!

Here is an update of the trails around the Chateau. Last weeks rain has slowed our progress considerably but we are still working on everything and hope to have most trails set for the weekend

    Nordic Ski Trails:

Fairview Loop (#2): Sled packed from Chateau to the top of the BIG hill. Shoveling and trail work will continue this week.

Upper Tramline (#3): Double Trackset, Good condition.

Shoreline (#4): Shoveling and seld packing will be finished by the end of the week.

Lake Trail (#4): Last weeks rain and warm temperatures really set us back. There is currently to much slush on top of ice for a safe trail along the lake. We will need some prolonged cold for this to freeze. Travel not recommended.

Upper Telemark and Peyto Trails (#5&#7): DOUBLE TRACKSET! Nov. 29. Still has some twigs poking through, but for November it’s skiing really well.

    Teaching Grid: Leveled, Dec. 29.

  84. Although the GBCTA is still waiting for permission to resume its activities in West Bragg, our counterparts at Parks have been gracious in roller packing a number of our trails for us. They include but are not limited to Iron Springs, Sundog, Elbow, and Crystal Line. Base is thin and natural hazards exist but lots of people are enjoying the snow with rock skis. Have fun out there and hope to see you on the trails soon!

  85. Important Note to WBC Trail Users

The occurrence of an accident with one of our volunteers earlier this autumn has necessitated a suspension of volunteer activities by the GBCTA. This means that we won’t be able to use volunteers to either clear deadfall from the trails after the recent wind events or to pack and track the beautiful snow that has just fallen. We are working hard with Parks and Public Lands to get back into action as soon as possible and are using contractors to do work wherever we can.

If you are fatbiking our trails, please be mindful of the numerous fallen trees. If you are heading out for a ski, remember that there is no base yet.

Thanks for your patience as we endeavour to continue to provide you with the kind of amazing trail experience you’ve come to expect.
