Jan 22 West Bragg Creek Update from GBCTA Groomer Jeff:

Today we were able to get some new classic tracks laid on West Crystal Line and Links 2,3 and 4.

We will attempt to lay new tracks on other trails, but it takes time, as numerous passes are required to break up the icy troughs.

For now Classic skiing is best suited to West Crystal Line, its links, and Loggers. Mountain Road has defined tracks but they are quite icy on the East end.

Skate skiing on the other hand is fantastic right now. Mountain Road to the Mountain View intersection, West and East Crystal Line and Sundog are all very fun to ski.

Keep in mind conditions can change quickly and exercise caution, especially on hills.

Dogs… Off-leash area sign

There have been numerous inquiries regarding the very misleading signage related to dogs needing to be on leash ‘in the Rec area’.

This actually refers to the Provincial Recreation Area or PRA which is a small area that surrounds the parking lot. Once your dog is outside the actual PRA it is allowed to be off leash.

Look for signage that defines the PRA perimeter.

Jan 20 update from Kicking Horse Ski Club:

Emerald Lake. Joe set tracks there yesterday–but not on the slushy lake! He’s planning on doing Field /Tally Ho/ Kicking Horse trail today–possibly a needed pass on the Connector now that we go some good snow–if he has time??

Conditions virtually the same as our last report.
Classic tracks are generally icy throughout. Numerous trails should be avoided as they are hard and icy. These include Hostel Loop, Elbow Trail, Telephone, and Mountain View. Not recommended.
We did spend quite a bit of time renovating the classic tracks on Loggers on Jan. 19, 2018 with some success. They may be shallow in some areas however.
Without hydraulic tilling equipment, renovation of classic tracks is extremely difficult and time consuming, so please be patient in your expectations.
Skate Lanes on the other hand are in good shape. All have been renovated as of Jan.19, 2018. This includes core trails: East and West Crystal Lines, Sundog, Chickadee, Mountain Road, and Hostel Meadow. Caution should still be exercised on hills.

Very challenging conditions at West Bragg due to the recent warm weather.
It was raining lightly this morning, but as of 10 am the sun is shining.
Skate lanes have been renovated and conditions are reasonable on West and East Crystal Lines, Sundog, and Mountain Road.
Classic tracks are glazed and icy in most areas. Caution is advised when encountering any hills.
Let the snow dancing commence!

Jan 13 Update from the Kicking Horse Ski Club:

“Connector” open between Emerald Lake & Field/Nat. Bridge
Yes–the first track is in. Beautiful soft snow and -8 temp.! Heaven–but be weary of branches, sticks and soft pole plants–or you will do a head plant yourself. Ski safe and enjoy the Connection eh?

Jan 11 update from Kicking Horse Ski Club re: Emerald Lake

Our track setter worked the trails today and had much trouble with water flooding over the ice at the back end of the lake! Please be adviced that skiers should only use the short section to avoid the avalanche area — and stay on shore–and NOT ski on the ice to the back!! They will run into water and slush if they do. Thank you, Marilyn KHSC

West Bragg Creek update from GBCTA Groomer Jeff:

Happy New Years Everyone!

Thanks to intrepid groomers Erik and Dwayne, much of the 10-15 cm of snow we received in the last 36 hrs got roller packed yesterday. Track setting continued today and the following trails are groomed and track set:

West Crystal and Links, East Crystal, Sundog, Loggers, Mountain View, Moose Connector, Bunny and Chickadee.

The remaining trails are skier set and will be groomed and track set Jan. 1st.

Conditions overall are excellent. With warmer chinook temps on the way for mid week, you’d best get out and enjoy while you can!

Happy trails,
jeff

West Bragg Creek update from GBCTA Groomer Jeff:

Compliments of the season everyone!

Groomers have finally caught up with all the snow we received last week and have completed grooming and track setting the following trails:

Mountain View, Mountain View West, Moose Loop, Moose Connector, Loggers, East and West Crystals plus links, Sundog, Iron Springs, Elbow North, Chickadee and Bunny.

Conditions are quite good, so get out and enjoy! Very few hazards exist but be on the lookout for the odd thin spot.

Remember that trail grooming is 100% donor supported. Our equipment doesn’t run if we don’t have fuel…

Happy trails!

Shaganappi Update from Alasdair Fergusson of the Calgary Ski Club:

Hi fellow keen XC skiers,

7K of trails groomed and trackset for classic and skating.

Santa was very good to Calgary XC skiers this Christmas with his Christmas present of great snow – 20 cm depth off trail and 10 cm compacted depth on trail measured Saturday at Shaganappi.
But cold and with a strong wind at times – so bundle up!

And also from Santa – facilities of toilets and a warming hut thanks to fundraising by Calgary Ski Club volunteers.
But – Snowmaking on 2 km of trails has been delayed due to both weather and delays in delivery of equipment.

PLEASE NOTE: We have a terrible vandalism problem at Shaganappi – so many cut ropes that fence off sensitive golf course areas or bunkers that are dangerous to skiers at the bottom of hills.
In many cases every length of rope between our metal stakes has been cut, sometimes into short lengths.
It is disgusting and will take a lot of volunteer effort to repair until the next vandals strike.

WE ASK ALL SKIERS TO RESPECT THE FENCED AREAS DESPITE THE CUT ROPES AND NOT SKI OR SNOWSHOE ON THESE SENSITIVE AREAS TO PROTECT THE UNDERLYING VALUABLE TURF, OR FOR SKIER SAFETY.
Golf Course photos show that the icy tracks of skis or snowshoes delay melt and grass growth in spring – So please assist the Calgary Ski Club volunteers in maintaining availability of this wonderful asset for skiing.

Also there have been many break-ins to the golf course maintenance building and theft of tools.

The good news is that with Calgary Ski Club fundraising we have 2 benefits for skiing:
1. We have rented 2 Porta-Potties for public use on the north side of the Golf Clubhouse. Hopefully these survive the vandalism.
2. We have rented an ATCO Trailer for use as a Warming Hut for special groups such as school groups, Special Olympics, Club groups.
Due to our concerns re vandalism and theft, The ATCO will be padlocked at all times BUT the key will be supplied to trusted groups together with the key to the heated indoor washrooms, as we have done for many years ON CONDITION that the group leader inspects and cleans the facility before returning the key to me.
We are waiting to connect the ATCO to the electric power supply and also the supply of propane heating – hopefully soon after the holiday.

Enjoy XC skiing at your City-Centre Golf Course with LRT Station 200 metres from trail head and abundant on-site asphalt parking.

Yoho update from Marilyn at the Kicking Horse Ski Club:

Update Dec 25 @ 11:30 a.m: “Merry Christmas everyone–the bridge got repaired by Santa and the elf! Enjoy your day skiing!”

With ever changing weather conditions–the bridge at the top of the Alluvial Fan(skiing clockwise) has flooded over! Do not cross it! We suggest going counter clockwise to the back of the fan and returning the same way.
Trails were refreshed 2 days ago at Emerald–including the TREE HUGGER trail near shore. Tally-Ho and Kicking Horse trail refreshed yesterday. Were in good shape except for that IMPASSIBLE BRIDGE!
Merry Christmas everyone!

Yoho update from Marilyn at the Kicking Horse Ski Club:

We’re good for snow and clear skies on our trails and the track setter guy has been keeping up with it really well.
On the heals of our best snowfall in weeks, Joe has made tracks on the Tally-Ho, Kicking Horse Fire Road, Yoho Valley Road and all of Emerald Lake –except for the Tree Hugger(shore) Trail which is just skidoo packed.
We have lots to ski over the next while and lot’s to be THANKFUL for. Happy Christmas skiers and snowshoers!!

That is one heck of a lot of shovelling you did today, with a pathetic shovel. Do you need a Go-Fund-Me page?
It was a pleasure skiing back on Fairview later on that wide flat groomed trail.

Hi All!

Here is an update of the trails around the Chateau. Last weeks rain has slowed our progress considerably but we are still working on everything and hope to have most trails set for the weekend

Nordic Ski Trails:

Fairview Loop (#2): Sled packed from Chateau to the top of the BIG hill. Shoveling and trail work will continue this week.

Upper Tramline (#3): Double Trackset, Good condition.

Shoreline (#4): Shoveling and seld packing will be finished by the end of the week.

Lake Trail (#4): Last weeks rain and warm temperatures really set us back. There is currently to much slush on top of ice for a safe trail along the lake. We will need some prolonged cold for this to freeze. Travel not recommended.

Upper Telemark and Peyto Trails (#5&#7): DOUBLE TRACKSET! Nov. 29. Still has some twigs poking through, but for November it’s skiing really well.

Teaching Grid: Leveled, Dec. 29.

Although the GBCTA is still waiting for permission to resume its activities in West Bragg, our counterparts at Parks have been gracious in roller packing a number of our trails for us. They include but are not limited to Iron Springs, Sundog, Elbow, and Crystal Line. Base is thin and natural hazards exist but lots of people are enjoying the snow with rock skis. Have fun out there and hope to see you on the trails soon!

The occurrence of an accident with one of our volunteers earlier this autumn has necessitated a suspension of volunteer activities by the GBCTA. This means that we won’t be able to use volunteers to either clear deadfall from the trails after the recent wind events or to pack and track the beautiful snow that has just fallen. We are working hard with Parks and Public Lands to get back into action as soon as possible and are using contractors to do work wherever we can.

If you are fatbiking our trails, please be mindful of the numerous fallen trees. If you are heading out for a ski, remember that there is no base yet.

Thanks for your patience as we endeavour to continue to provide you with the kind of amazing trail experience you’ve come to expect.

Peter Tucker
GBCTA President
