Spare ski tip!?!

When I started skiing in ’82, someone said I should carry a emergency ski tip. Well, it’s actually in Suzanne’s pack so WE’ve been carrying this thing for nearly 30 years. Never had to use it for ourselves or to help others. Does anybody out there carry these things? We’re afraid to leave it home now would be to tempt Murphy so we’ll keep it in Suzanne’s pack for a few more years. She will gladly give it to whoever needs it on the trail!

I enjoy listening to anything with a good beat, even better if it’s something I can sing along to. These days I’m singing along to the tunes of Raffi and anything that makes my 6 month old smile. We finally got him out on skis a few weeks ago, he snoozed the entire time in the chariot. Definitely is a lot more work pulling him, especially if there is any sort of incline. But we love taking him outdoors to enjoy the fresh air and the amazing scenery.

I was skiing with my wife-to-be a few years ago up in Edmonton. It was early days in our relationship and I wanted to share XC skiing with her. So, we headed out to Elk Island. All was well until we came around a corner only to find a male bison occupying the trail. We had a nice conversation with the bison, indicating that it could have either the trail or the woods, his choice, and we would take the other. Fortunately, he decided on the woods. A few years later, now happily married, we headed out to Elk Island again, went on the same trail, and at the same corner encountered another bison! Fortuantely there was the same outcome.

I skies many a day after work in the dark at elk island I would stop by on the way home form work. There a few time when I would encounter a bison. Only on the rare occation did I have to take the woods.
The Bison were accomdating and been it is there home they were graces as the host. I always keep my distance and showed respect to them.

I have been living in calgary for a few years now. I do miss steping out the door and going for a ski.

My story has a bit of all your requested elements. On our annual gals XC ski weekend a few years ago, we ended up at Kilmorey Lodge at Waterton Lakes. The snow was incredible at the townsite, piled up to the eaves of most buildings. Despite chilly temps in the -20s we 4 gals piled into my SUV to do the Cameron Lake trails. Some of the assorted contents of our packs: chocolate, down parkas, thermos with tea or hot chocolate, packed lunch, extra toques, feet and hand warmers (lots of them). After a great day, with light flurries, the sun was beginning to set, the temp was dropping and we headed back to the trailhead. There was only 1 other car in the lot. As I got in to start the truck, no-go. It won’t start. I try again, still nothing. Great. As any good Canadian would, I fortunately had a winter survival kit in the car and for the first time ever, had to break out the candles to keep us warm as the temp was now -25 out there and we were chilled from our exertions and our slightly damp clothes. At least the candles were aromatherapy ones so we smelled nice as we waited hopefully for the owners of the last vehicle to show up. They eventually did and very kindly drove us back to the Kilmorey, who then sent their resident fix-everything engineer with us, back to the truck to get it started. He did. I was so happy, I kissed him (I think he was a bit flummoxed by it). The moral of the story – aromatherapy candles, chocolate and a kiss can help get you through a lot of things!! I think wine might have been useful too. So now whenever headed out to play in the snow and I carpool with anyone else, I ask if they have a winter safety kit in the car. When they mock me, I tell them this story and they stop making fun of me. Sadly, it was not too long after that the Kilmorey burned down. Thanks Bob for all your great work and a fabulous, invaluable site, its hard to find good current info on the trails.

One of my favorite cross-country ski memories was skiing with my two black labrador retrievers at Kelowna Nordic in spring 2008. This place is a true gem, especially for those wanting to ski with dogs off-leash on groomed trails. They have a significant amount of trails that are dog friendly. My pups and I spent a week there, skiing most days. They loved it when I’d go down hill fast so we could all go fast together. They just loved being able to run and run and run on the hard packed groomed trails. The conditions, grooming, scenery, and weather were spectacular. It was just me and my pups, and there was no other place I wanted to be.

One of my favorite quotes is “Wherever you go, there you are.”

Hmmm….favorite red wine? Well, I like most, but I’d say a Malbec is usually a nice pick.

My favourite wine is from New Zealand, it is a pinot noir by Mt Difficulty.
Every time I drink it I think of it growing in flavour amongst the rolling hills of central Otago in NZ.
It brings back memories of camping trips and Christmas BBQ’s. It makes me think of my Icebreaker growers (sheep) wandering the barren hills and how cold it gets, which finally turns my mind back to snow. The thought of snow always brings me back to Canada.

It is the taste of home enjoyed in my new home.

- “Another day in paradise” because we’re so very fortunate to live in Canada and to have so many blessings on a daily basis

Important things you carry in your backpack
- I carry a lot less than I did twenty years ago because I’ve learned over time. However, the water and the spare gloves still come in the backpack.

What type of music you enjoy
- Just about everything – CKUA is the only radio station for music lovers in Alberta.

Your favourite red wine
- Any Australian Shiraz, followed closely by Merlot

How did you originally find this blog
- From my Thursday morning Ski Fitness buddies at Foothills Nordic, the best ski club in town. J

Got out for my first ski last weekend at the Nordic Centre. Even though I was sick, the snow beckoned. Favorite Red Wine is my father in law’s from…Germany of all places. 2003 Zwoelberich Spaetburgunder. Off to ski in Kananaskis tomorrow with my slalom canoe/kayak athletes.

Cross country skiing might become more popular if it was introduced in public schools to children. Or if local club programs were accessible to people of all socioeconomic levels. Then again if it was more popular there would be more people on the trails and that would likely be less enjoyable selfishly speaking..

Hi Rhonda,
Just thought I’d let you know that Foothills Nordic Ski Club is doing their part of trying to get children turned onto country skiing by going to 6 Calgary elementary schools per year with a trailer full of ski equipment and 2 coaches to give 3 days of lessons to the students. We also transform the school yard into track set trails before hand. It’s been a huge success and uplifting to see all these young ones enjoying being outside on skis!

Thanks, my son goes to Westgate Elementary School. I’ll find out if FNSC goes there. Sounds like a great way to get kids interested.

I suppose this falls under “Other…”

I am a psychologist living in Calgary, but I did my graduate training in Montreal. I went back to Quebec this past weekend to defend my doctoral dissertation. Unfortunately, that meant losing out on what must have been an AMAZING ski weekend in my beloved Rockies. On the up side, I came back with my Ph.D.! So I guess one ski-free weekend was worth it. Now I’ll have to make up for it though…

I carry a lot of things in my pack, but my secret weapon is an extra toque. It’s a bit thicker than my skiing one and I put it on during rests stops so I stay warm. Because I’m not active while wearing it, it goes in the pack dry always ready for the next stop.

Hi Bob!

I found your site while looking for a good trail to head out on this Friday. Something that I like to carry in my backpack (and really am disappointed when I forget) is some J.Lohr cab sauv wine and some Lindt dark chocolate. Skiing + wine + dark chocolate = a pretty great day.

Thanks!

A neighbour introduced me to you, SkierBob, at the Cookie Race two years ago. He said we are all neighbours in this lovely, leafy neighbourhood of MP. And he recommended your blog highly. I can see why!

Hello! I am an avid xc skier an mom of 2 kids aged 10 and 6. The kids have done bunnies/jackrabbits for 2 years thru the excellent leadership of Logan from u of c. When skiing w my kids, I carry lots of treats and surprises in my pack. Favorites to keep my littlest skier going include chic covered acai berries from Costco! This is essential b/c my now 6 year old has the tenacity to scream for km’s in certain situations…..(last feb on a cold day at west Bragg comes to mind….) so proactive ‘treat’ment helps a great deal
I also carry my dented but trusty thermos w either apple cider or hot choc to which snow can be added….
Extra mitts/gloves/layers are also a big help!
After skiing, when warm at home, red wine is essential. Recently, I tried Durgutti from Argentina at a restaurant – have yet to look for at the liquor store…
I’ll offer a vote of confidence for the wonderfulness of Nipika lodge where I have been 5 or 6 times!
Thx to Jason for sending me this wonderful link!

I carry extra warm clothes in my pack. To date I have done most of my skiing in Ontario where most ski outings involve multiple loops of relatively short trails. It is a whole different story in the mountains where one can end up many kilometers from the trail head. The weather can also change much more quickly in the mountains. The extra clothes also gives one extra confidence and the willingness to go farther and stay out longer. This contributes to making the ski outing more enjoyable.

We enjoy your website Bob. Thanks.

Hi Bob. Finding your site was a happy accident, while I was searching
for xc trail conditions last year (or was it the year before?). Now I usually check your site first, before the usual methods. Thanks for all the great posts!

What do I carry in my backpack for cross country skiing?
Extra clothing like a light windbreaker, down ski jacket, 3 pairs of gloves, a hat with ear flaps, sox, a neck warmer and ski mask. Also carry a small first aid kit, a swiss army knife, extra shoe laces, sun glasses, an extra ski tip, copper wire, a heat blanket, a compass and some high energy bars.

Important things you carry in your backpack:
I take extra clothing that changes depending on the trail length and weather.
Small first aid kit
Therm-a-rest inflatable seat for keeping my rear warm during lunch breaks (best $20 ever spent!)
Hot Powerade in a thermos, sounds weird but it goes down a treat on those -20 days.

Things I carry in my backpack. Well, this depends where I am going. If I am traveling, I carry passport, money, water bottle, book, maps, colouring book and crayons for my daughter, snacks, diaper wipes, and hat.
