We’ve had many reports from various skiers about the territorial grouse on Pocaterra, and this report came in yesterday from Simon: “Heading up the big hill at Pocaterra, we got a surprise about 1 km up – a spruce grouse sitting directly on the trail. He started walking towards us, and decided to try and drive us off by pecking my boots. We started skiing away and he kept after us. At one point I tried to ski away faster, and my “upkick” lifted him into the air – amazingly it didn’t seem to deter him at all. Eventually I think he got tired, as when we looked back, he was still slowly waddling down the trail after us.”
Steve always seems to get sun when he skis to the Kananaskis Fire Lookout.
We’re finally getting some new snow and tracksetting in Banff. It looks like Chuck had pretty nice conditions on Redearth creek yesterday.
Wonderful photo!! What a beautiful creature. I love that he’s not intimidated at all by us humans. If he’s committed to his territory, he will stay very fit this winter chasing all the skiers.
