Thursday morning update

Aspen trail (part of the Kananaskis Village trails) was trackset last night. File photo.

The Kananaskis Village and Ribbon Creek trails were trackset last night. There will be a bit of fresh snow on top of the tracksetting. Almost the entire system has been groomed since Feb 19. The Ribbon Creek snowcat is going to PLPP starting today to help with the Cookie Race grooming.

The trail report mentions…

“Conditions are very good with something for everyone. Skogan should have 5cm+ for those who like a nice cushion of powder to make the downhills more fun. Bill Milne a nice veneer of 3 cm for perfect glide. The Village trails about 2 cm over tonight’s grooming.”

The entire Mt Shark system of trails was trackset last night.

Feb 21: Early morning grooming at West Bragg Creek

West Bragg Creek update from Groomer Jeff:

“Another 5-7cm fell in West Bragg and the crew packed all night and has track set all core trails this morning. Grooming will continue on outlying trails throughout the day. It will be an incredible bluebird day of skiing in kcountry.”

When planning your weekend skiing, take into consideration that PLPP will be crazy busy on Saturday with the Cookie Race. Tom from Foothills Ski Club cautions…

“PLPP and in particular the area around Pocaterra Hut will indeed be busy on Saturday during the Cookie Race, though trails remain open to the public. But we do advise against skiing from Boulton on the Moraine and Fox Creek trails between 11am and 2pm since racers will be descending those single-track trails in a hurry. 🙂 “

That was a short but powerful storm which ripped through yesterday evening. CBC reported…

“A series of multi-vehicle pileups shut down Highway 1 in both directions near Canmore, Alta., on Wednesday with reports of up to 40 vehicles in the ditch due to snow and icy roads.

The province issued a critical emergency alert at 6:50 p.m., warning of dangerous highway conditions on Highway 1 between Canmore and Cochrane, west of Calgary. The alert was cancelled shortly after 9 p.m.”

The long-range forecast predicts sub-zero temperatures(but not the bitter cold we’ve just been through) for the next two weeks, so we should have excellent skiing for the near future.
