Bear and bare

With curiosity getting the better of me, we took a Sunday drive to Lake Louise yesterday. It was great seeing a bear,  but I would have preferred seeing some snow.

There’s a dusting of snow on Upper Tramline, but Moraine Lake road was completely bare, with only wet pavement showing. Same goes for the Great Divide trail.

The grooming equipment is at the trailhead and ready to go: the roller, for the initial packing, and the tracksetter which is used in conjunction with the big Alpina snowmobile. So far, they are collecting dust.

Same story on the Great Divide trail, no snow.

The snow will arrive sooner  or later, so this would be a good time to remind everyone who is considering an overnight trip to Lake Louise this winter that Mountaineer Lodge is now open year-round, and they have very reasonable rates.

Do you enjoy skiing in Yoho and Emerald Lake?

MembersIf you’re venturing a little further afield, I’m pleased to announce that Emerald Lake Lodge opens for the winter on Nov 29, and they are offering their fabulous deal for XC skiers again. You need to be a ski club member to get the low rate, but we have that covered too. The Kicking Horse Ski Club  does the grooming in Yoho and Emerald Lake and is grateful for any $40 memberships. It will help them continue with the excellent work they’ve been doing the past two years. They’ll send you a membership card which you can then use to get the special rate.

The Kicking Horse Ski Club, based in Field, BC, has already started their membership list which you can see posted on their website. I would normally be on that list already, but they gave me an Honorary Lifetime membership last year, something I treasure and am humbled by.

  1. Go to West Bragg Creek to see snow and ski on roller-packed natural snow.
