Wild flowers at Bow Valley Provincial Park

Wildflower season is in full swing at Bow Valley Provincial park. Here are a few photos from the Many Springs trail which were taken on Friday June 17. Included is a photo of buffalo berries(aka bear food), which I’ve never seen this early in the season before.

As the season changes, so do the flowers which are in bloom. Two weeks from now you’ll see a different variety. On this trip we saw lady’s slipper, wood lily, elephant’s head, blue flax, paintbrush, sweetvetch, columbine, potentilla, and buffalo bean. I was surprised that we didn’t see any shooting stars – it should be the season for them.

  1. This report was very timely! I had been thinking of taking an elderly friend out there, but was worried about flooding. Last time I was there the boardwalk was under water.
We went out today and it was perfect!
    Thank you 🙂

  2. Hi Bob – the shooting stars bloom after the crocus and yellow bean and are always accompanied by the forgetmenots. They are finished now except where large snow banks were slow in melting. We saw a few up high on Junction Hill Saturday.

  3. Delightful! The water level looks quite low, too – are the springs visible again?

    • The water is very low, about 2 feet below the dock when normally at this time of year it would be at the same level as the dock. The springs weren’t too active but were clearly visible when we were there a couple weeks ago. I’ve added 2 photos at the end of the gallery which illustrate the water level and an example of an active spring.

      • There’s a golf course at Copetown which I pass when going to visit my brother in Hamilton.
In driving by yesterday I noticed that their huge natural pond is completely dry. I have never seen this before.
        Lawns look in mid-August condition.
