This is one of those rare winters where we can say every trail at the Canmore Nordic Centre is in excellent condition. Next time you’re skiing here, make sure you take some of the so-called “minor” trails, many of which are new. I checked out all of the new trails in the above photo, as well as Bow Trail, Meadowview, Banff Trail, Silvertip, but my favourite today and the first time I’ve skied it was the King of Sweden. More on that later.
One of the interesting stories of today was the temperature. It was -17 when I started skiing at noon, but -1 when I came back to the Daylodge two hours later. The air was a lot colder at lower elevations such as Bow Trail, but up on Meadowview it was balmy.
Ran into John Addicott on Bow Trail and reminisced about the Loppet. John did the entire 71K a couple years ago when conditions weren’t very nice. Good to see he’s still skiing! Anyway, just received an email from John about the temperature as he was driving home: “It was 0 at CNC when we left. Then -6 when we hit the highway, then -12 at Lac des Arc, and -18 at Morley. Quite a day.”
Bow Trail is now in superb condition. Being at the lowest elevation, it’s usually the last major trail to get good snow. Not a twig, no dirt, not even a blade of grass in the tracks today.
In the above photo on the left is Sean Huggins-Chan. Crazy guy. He’ll be attempting to do the 71K Lake Louise to Banff loppet next weekend. Solo.
From Meadowview, I took Silvertip down to Banff trail and skied back to the Daylodge, thinking my day was over. Ran into Peter who was just getting set to go out again, so I joined him and did it all over again. On the return, though, we decided to try out the new trail, The King of Sweden, to see where it would take us. Talk about a neat and fun trail. Downhill all the way, fast but not scary fast, no sharp turns, and it gets you back to the daylodge after a short ski on Olympic.
Diana left a comment regarding West Bragg Creek on the previous thread. She saw the tracksetter working there today.
The Banff tracksetter did the Spray River, both the West and East sides.
Bob Wilson’s Calgary Ski Club group skied in the Pineapple Express conditions on Sat. from Pocaterra. Conditions were good as long as the trails were groomed & trackset. Pocaterra was, & Stroil & Packers but our loop back to Pocaterra became arduous on the skier-set tracks in 20 or so cm of fresh snow on Amos, Woolley & Meadow.
