Happy new year! Some of the trails at Mt Shark were trackset overnight. Check the Grooming Reports for details. Shaganappi has a new website which is now on my main menu, and there was grooming activity last night.
I’ve picked out some photos that have been posted on here since the beginning of ski season, which was two weeks earlier than usual. Moraine Lake road was roller-packed on Oct 17. West Bragg Creek was trackset on Oct 22.
That photo by Jeremy is just fantastic. Inspiring, and a pretty good Christmas post card with its perfectly placed “ornament”. And my favourite place to ski on a sunny day of course. Happy new year Bob et al! See you on the trails or at a couch. (-:
MaSid, how would you answer this question from Katrina regarding the photo…
Question – possibly a dumb one since I haven’t done much xcountry skiing yet. on a single track such as in the pic…(gorgeous pic too btw) what’s the etiquette on two skiers approaching each other from opposite sides?
Somebody moves over and puts in a fresh layby track (the track through the meadow prior to the last dump had multiple laybys, or passing lanes). As it’s flat, whoever chooses to do so first, or the smaller party (number of people, not size!). On hills, downhill skier(s) have the right of way, uphill skier moves over. If going in the same direction and faster skier approaching from behind, slower skier steps aside (faster skier may need to notify by saying “track”, but slower skier should keep an ear tuned to anticipate approaching skiers). As to going right or left, just like driving, unless terrain/conditions call for otherwise. Important for parties with multiple people to all step to the same side, especially if making way for a descending skier. Nothing worse than descending and having a large party scatter back and forth across the trail, then half of them change their mind, at the same time the other half does (-;
