Comments on the weekend’s skiing

Emerald Lake & Yoho

John the tracksetter has some news for us:

“I just finished the Kicking Horse Fire Road, Tally Ho, and the Emerald Connector. Hans did a great job tracking the Emerald Lake trails.”

What’s on your agenda for the weekend?

A day of skiing in our gorgeous surroundings will be memorable for the rest of your life. A day of shopping? Avoid the malls, the crowds, and traffic jams. Go skiing on one of the beautiful trails which we have in Kananaskis and Banff and let us all know how the conditions were. If you can include a photo, so much the better.

Concerned about the cold?

Go to a destination where you can be near a daylodge: Pocaterra is the obvious one, but the PLPP Visitor Centre has a spacious and bright vistor’s area with a blazing fireplace. The Kananaskis Village trails are just a stone’s throw from the Village Centre where you can warm up in the lobby of the hotel and drink hot chocolate(it’s usually free, too). Ribbon Creek Groceries has a deli with wonderful hot soup.

The Canmore Nordic Centre has a large daylodge with, what else, a blazing fireplace! The Spray River trail in Banff is next door to the Banff Springs Hotel.

It’s rare to have such an excellent choice of trails this early in the season. Have fun!

  1. …and trails on the Smith-Dorrien Road have Mount Engadine Lodge nearby, and the soup, coffee, and beers consumed this afternoon after skiing were fantastic (after a -30C start to Chester Lake this morning!).
