Nicer than expected at CNC

It had warmed up to -11 by the time I made my way onto the snow at 3 pm at the Canmore Nordic Centre. After one round, I was in the daylodge; not to warm up, but to shed a layer. The early morning temperature of -23 intimidated me into dressing too warm.

Michelle is warming up in the daylodge after skiing for almost an hour on her first time out this year

A little more distance has been added to the trails including a few hunded metres on the competition trails.  Frozen Thunder has a few icy spots, but is in better shape than it was a couple weeks ago. The snow in the vicinity of the stadium is excellent, and there is a 9-lane practice grid.

As predicted, waxing was easy with a snow temperature of -12. Cheap Swix green(-7/-13) worked well, and I had no trouble on any  hills.

Nipika update

Lyle Wilson from Nipika Mountain Resort just sent this email : “We have now got 100% packed but will not open until we can provide safe, hazard-free trails. I’ll keep you posted. With the snow forecast for the coming week we are optimistic about opening for next weekend.”

If you were out on the snow today, I hope you’ll leave a comment on the “Trip Reports” page. Everyone has a voracious appetite for news about ski trails.

Just a reminder, only one day remaining to enter the “Free Ski Lessons” contest. We’ll be making the draw on Monday.
