  1. The Fox Creek and Jewel Pass Trails need your help.
We are in need of lots of strong volunteers this coming week, Monday, Aug. 19 to Friday, Aug. 23, to assist with rebuilding 2 different trails.

Volunteers are needed for the Jewel Pass trail (accessed from Barrier Dam) to assist with trail rebuilding and bridge work. The project will start on Monday, August 19 and continue through Friday August 23. This is medium to heavy work (what we like to call work for elk and grizzly type volunteers) and will include shaping the sides of trails, creating drainage, moving loose rocks and debris. tamping tread and assisting with bridgework. Volunteer for just one day or for as many days as you would like, you need not volunteer for all 5 days.
On the Fox Creek Trail, near Kananaskis Lakes, work will continue building gabion walls for a bridge crossing as well as building a new section of trail. The gabion wall work involves gathering rocks and placing them in metal mesh cages in order to create a solid bridge crossing on the Fox Creek trail, an important section of the route to Elk Pass. The work requires a lot of bending so best suited to people with reasonably strong backs. A little further down the trail, a new section of trail is required. Trail rebuilding requires digging, moving earth, shaping the sides of trails, creating drainage and tamping tread. Work at Fox Creek will run from Tuesday, August 20 through Thursday, Aug 22. You need not volunteer for all 3 days. Volunteer for just one day or for as many days as you would like.

You can volunteer as an individual or as a group. We are also happy to accept teenage volunteers, over the age of 12. Advise us if your teenager wishes to participate unaccompanied and we will e-mail to you a consent form to sign.

If you need to take a day away from your work or otherwise change your plans in order to help us rebuild Kananaskis trails, please confirm with us that volunteers are still required for the date before you change important plans.

As many of our volunteers must travel a considerable distance in order to help us, we are encouraging people to carpool. If you have extra space in your vehicle and are able to offer another volunteer a ride, please indicate this in your email along with the town or quadrant of the city you will be coming from. Please note that we are unable to coordinate rides but will pass this information on to those people looking for rides. If you do not wish your contact information to be made public, please do not offer to provide a lift.

It is imperative to sign up before you come to insure we have adequate supervision and tools available.
To volunteer for any of these projects, please email: trails@kananaskis.org. Help us to manage the many volunteer requests that we are processing by putting in the “subject line” of your email dates you are available and, if you have a preference, the location at which you would like to work (eg: Fox Creek, Aug 21).
We wish to thanks everyone who has signed up recently as a Friends of Kananaskis Volunteer. We have had an excellent response to our volunteer days thus far.

We offer ongoing thanks to TransAlta, our trail care sponsor for 2013, as well as the Town of Canmore, 24 Hr Sports, Elements, Patagonia and our private donors.

  2. Needed, volunteers with strong backs for the Fox Creek Trail

Help build a secure bridge crossing by creating gabion stone walls

The work involves gathering rocks and placing them in metal mesh cages in order to create a solid bridge crossing on the Fox Creek trail, an important section of the route to Elk Pass. The work requires a lot of bending so best suited to people with strong backs. You will be working in or near the creek so volunteers must not mind if they get wet.
