Update on Banff trails

Get prepared for a big dump of snow in Banff tonight and Sunday. In the mean time, Leona and Carl have sent this update:

Hello Skier Bob;

We have been visiting Banff this week and have used your website to figure out where to ski. I wasn’t sure how to add a trip report, so I thought I would send to you. If you think these are helpful, you can add to your reports. Thanks for a great website. The best skiing was west of Banff.

Friday March 15:
Lake Louise loop, Fairview Loop and Moraine Lake:
Lake Louise loop and Fairview loop had just been trackset and were in great condition. The downhill section was fun (no ice!) and the tracks were lovely. Fairview is a lovely trail. Moraine Lake trails had been trackset the day before we believe, but there were lots of skied in tracks, so it was a fine ski. The day was overcast, so the usually afternoon slush did not happen.

Thursday March 14:
Redearth trail into Shadow Lake:
A little bit of new snow made this ski very enjoyable. The places were the sun hit the trail were becoming soft as we skied into the area. and most people were ‘icing up’ as they skied. The ski out was fun but was definitely slushy when you reached the bottom 2 km. It was a fantastic day and ski. Shadow Lake is absolutely beautiful and the lodge offers afternoon tea ($15). There were even some vacancies at the lodge if you wanted an overnight.

Wednesday March 13:
Pipestone trails:
We skied almost all the trails. Early in the day, the tracks were glazed (where the sun had hit the day before). In the afternoon, the trails were slushy. However, we both loved this area and would ski it again!

Earlier in the week:
Spray River trail (east and west): We last skied this trail on Tuesday and it was deteriorating rapidly. Icy and debris on the trail. The trail needs to be trackset again before we will venture onto it.

Hope this helps! Your website is a great resource for visitors like us.

  1. Hi Leona and Carl-
    So glad you are enjoying the Rockies! Perhaps that will be your next year’s resting spot?
