3 cm at Lake Louise

Right on schedule, the snow has arrived at Lake Louise, but still not enough for packing or grooming. The Snow Forecast shows 10 cm of snow at the elevation of the MLR trailhead over the weekend. It then turns cold, so hopefully the snow will stick around.

Cheryl was in Lake Louise today and sent this report and some photos of Moraine Lake road:

“Snowing on Moraine Lake Road today. The snow was quite heavy and wet. About 3cm. Some pavement showing through. The roller is already for packing!”

I went for a ski around 5:30 pm on Frozen Thunder. Now into day eight, it’s holding up well albeit a bit sugary by late in the day. One thing I’ve noticed this year is how much cleaner the snow is. There’s hardly any dirt or sawdust, just a bit near the starting area which is probably from people tracking the dirt onto the snow.

  1. K-Country Public Safety facebook page says- 10 cm at Burstall Pass. Probably a fair bit less at road level, I would guess. In the past we have had “good enough” XC skiing several times in early November to the last trees below the Robertson Glacier, with only about 25 cm on the ground, as the old road part of the Burstall Trail is mostly pretty smooth.
Looked like about the same amount of snow, on the Sunshine webcam.
After a stellar summer and fall of mountainbiking, my feelings are mixed about the looming ski season, but I’ll embrace it with open arms when it comes. 🙂

  2. Thank you Cheryl! Wonderful! That gives us a start. I am looking forward to future postings by anyone who happens to be in the Moraine Lake Road area.
