It’s almost the end of February and I had yet to ski the first 4K of Pocaterra this winter. I’ve been on Upper Pocaterra many times but had not started a ski trip from the hut.
I started out in sunshine and blue skies around 2 pm. The air temperature was -2°C and the tracks were slick but not icy. I tried to get by on VR50(0/-4) but I also had to use a fair bit of that ArmStrong wax which Helen referred to.
My plan was to ski to the Packers junction and turn around and enjoy the fast trip back down. It was not to be. It started snowing when I was about 2K from Packers, so with fresh snow in the tracks, the glide suffered. On the other side of that coin, the fresh snow solved all my grip problems.
I skied about 500 metres on Lynx and it’s in really nice shape. I also added some variety on the way back by skiing on Come-Along.
By the time I got back to the hut, there was about 1 cm of accumulation. There’s more snow in the forecast for tonight but the jury is still out on how much we’ll get. I have received about a half-cm in Canmore.
