Grooming updates

Lynx on Jan 18

Jan 19, 2021

Thanks for all the trip reports yesterday.

When I observed “Big Tex” parked at the Upper Lake, I was expecting that it was Tyrwhitt’s turn to finally have some tracksetting.

Packers on Jan 18

The following trails were trackset last night in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park:

  • Tyrwhitt
  • Lookout
  • Hydroline
  • Elk Pass(first 2K)

“Grooming on Monday night took place under clear skies, with temperatures around -10 c.”

This morning, the Lower Lake temp is -12°C. The PLPP maintenance compound temp is -14. The dreaded wind warning has been issued for all of the SkierBob domain for today. There is no significant snow in the forecast, so places like PLPP and Lake Louise are going to have the best conditions for the near future. It sounds like Cascade Valley was still in nice shape yesterday.

0700h Jan. 19, 2021: A number of freeze/thaw cycles and windy conditions have caused conditions to deteriorate, especially on wind and sun exposed areas like Moose Loop, Mountain View West, and Mountain View. Skate skiing is still reasonable on trails such as Mountain View West, East/West Crystal and Sundog. Expect debris, snow fleas and glazing in many areas on the classic tracks on the latter trails. It’s a good time to practice your double poling! Be safe and enjoy the warm weather, it’s about to end shortly!

Jan 19 Conditions Update: Trails that are recently groomed will be in the best shape. They soften up nicely with grooming but harden up quickly with the warm temps during the day and cold at night. Trails that havent been groomed in a few days will have icy sections. The upcoming colder weather will help that.

On the first day of registration, 102 skiers signed up for the Lake Louise to Banff Loppet virtual challenge. There’s still plenty of space available.
