Thankful for Oct snow(but watch for bears)

Ski conditions on Ribbon Creek  and Pocaterra

Skiing on Ribbon Creek Oct 11, 2009

We had an enjoyable Thanksgiving ski today and yesterday on Ribbon Creek. There are still plenty of rocks and hazards poking through the snow, but for October, you couldn’t expect anything better.  If you go across the bridge to Kovach, it’s a little scarier because you’re doing faster downhills and the final kilometre into the parking lot(on Terrace) is not skiable without hitting a lot of rocks.  We walked the final 200 metres on the steepest part of the downhill.
.
You definitely need rock skis here, and you’re going to scrape and gouge your skis regardless of how careful you are. That being said, there are some nice stretches where the snow coverage was really good.
.
When we were there on Saturday, the trail had some nice skier-set tracks, but today there was no sign of yesterday’s tracks due to people walking on the trail. More photos

Concerning Pocaterra, thanks to Ray for this report:

“george and I managed to ski the first 4k of pocaterra today oct 10th. some serious rocks, but only one endo. bear tracks in the snow most of the way, larger than my gloved hand, not sure if that equates to a big bruin or not. great to be on snow again, even if marginal!”
