Congratulations to Robert Rombough, the winner of a new pair of Fischer Sportglass skis. Thanks to everyone for all the interesting, insightful, and humorous comments/entries. You can still read the comments here win-fischer-sportglass-xc-skis/.
Robert’s name was picked from all entries by a special guest, Tracksetter John from Lake Louise, while we were all sitting in the lounge enjoying food and drink at Emerald Lake Lodge, after a fabulous day of skiing.
We have been at beautiful Emerald Lake for the past two nights, taking advantage of the $89/night special. I’m pretty sure that all the money we’ve saved on the room has been spent twice over on delicious food and drink! I was pleasantly surprised to see the wine list included Blue Mountain Gamay from Okanagan Falls, a wine that’s difficult to get in Alberta.
We skied a complete loop around the lake and alluvial fan by starting out on the east side of the lake, which is about 3K, then 4.3K through the fan, and heading back on the horse trail(2K) on the west side of the lake to the trailhead. With fairly clear skies, we enjoyed all the spectacular views that surround you when skiing here.
The fan and the horse trail are trackset with excellent conditions, while the hiking trail on the east side of the lake is well-packed. The east trail starts out by the Peaceful Pond with some pretty steep hills and the trail is narrow, so it is best to go on the west side if you’re a novice skier.
With plenty of daylight remaining, we headed to the natural bridge and skied the Kicking Horse river trail which was trackset for the first time on Saturday. Again, good conditions and by now, there was a light snow falling. The temperature was perfect for skiing at -5°C, and the snow was an easy-waxing -6°C. There is still not enough snow on the Emerald connector for tracksetting.
We are fortunate that we’re still able to experience this phenomenal skiing in Emerald Lake and Yoho after the cutbacks by Parks Canada. Thanks to the Kicking Horse ski club and Emerald Lake Lodge for funding the continued enjoyment of these trails. If you enjoy skiing here, consider making a donation, or buying a $40 membership in the Kicking Horse ski club. Read more We’re lucky-to-have-skiing-at-emerald-lake-this-winter.
