Yoho National Park
Usually when we go to Yoho, the Emerald Lake Horse trail and Alluvial Fan loop is on our agenda, but another enjoyable trail is the Emerald Connector and I wanted to see the spot where the avalanche occurred.
(Click on the photo to see a larger version) The avalanche was about 25 metres wide and at its deepest was about 6′ high. Hans the tracksetter spent 4 hours shovelling it out, and you can see there’s a good track through it now.
Air temperature was +2 and waxing was getting to be a challenge. Waxless skis would have worked well.
The Emerald Connector is an extremely enjoyable trail with small rolling hills as it winds through the forest between the Natural Bridge and Emerald Lake, about 10K one way. If you access it from the Field Visitor Centre, it would extend the trip to 12K.
You’ll delight in many lovely views along the way, including mountain peaks and the Emerald River.
The Kicking Horse Ski Club operates the ski rental shop at Emerald Lake. They give regular trail reports here http://khsc.ca/.
One of the best things about XC skiing in Yoho is that you’re near Truffle Pigs Bistro in Field, an award-winning and internationally acclaimed restaurant. We took another picture when the entree came, but you’d think I was a real glutton if you saw the amount of food in front of me. That’s really too bad because the presentation is mouth-watering in itself. It’s no secret why I’m a slow skier!
When we left Field, it was snowing quite heavily until a little past Lake Louise. By the sounds of the weather forecast, it should be coming our way.

I can always tell by the blog statistics when we’re talking about dogs. Yesterday’s views were about 25% higher than normal.
