Nipika was fantastic

Trails at Nipika with some neat and foreboding names. Jan 5, 2011

We’re back from a wonderful trip to Nipika. We skied one last time this morning on Henri’s Loop. The first feature on this trail is a “screamer” down to the Kootenay River.

After the initial fast start, it takes a while to finish this trail on account of all the places where you have to stop and admire the spectacular views. The trail is on the bank of the Kootenay River.

Yesterday, Cheryl managed to find some time to take a skate-ski lesson from Nipika manager Lyle Wilson. Lyle comes well-qualified, being a former coach of the Canadian national XC ski team.

As Cheryl was practicing her technique, Lyle’s assistant and Nipika top dog Rufus kept an eye on the proceedings:

At Nipika, ten steps from your cabin door and you’re on the ski trails. Snow conditions are excellent and in a little over two weeks, it’s the Nipika Loppet.

Although the accommodations at Nipika are already fully booked, if you want to travel the night before the loppet, Radium is about a half-hour away with lots of reasonably-priced motels. Registration for the loppet is through Zone 4.
