An amazing day of skiing everywhere. Quite a contrast in the parking lots, though, with Grizzly only having to contend with 6 cars at Boulton creek, while skiers at West Bragg were parking almost a kilometre down the road.

Canmore Nordic Centre
The trail marker at the Canmore Nordic Centre indicates that Flying Squirrel, Freddie’s Flip, King of Sweden, and Silvertip are “very difficult” trails. It neglects to mention that they are also the “most fun.”

Banff, Bow, and Meadowview trails are the major trails which get lots of use, but now that all the trails have good snow conditions, I like to get off the beaten path and ski some of the lesser-known trails. Most of them have fast descents with roller-coaster hills and tight turns.
The temperature at the nordic centre was -11°C, but the snow was very cold. My VR30 from yesterday was still gripping very well. When I arrived at 2:30 the main trails were still busy with skiers enjoying these fabulous conditions.
Shaganappi update
Alasdair says, “One couple I spoke to were so pleased that they had ridden the C-train for the first time and came to Shaganappi to go skiing.” I’ve left a comment on the Trip Reports page regarding tracksetting at Shaganappi.

I’m glad to hear of more challenging trails. Having spent time skiing in the Gats and Shield area of Ontario, there are some EXTREME trails out there that I just love. When Gatineau Park posts a trail as black diamond, you KNOW that you’re in for some hair-raising, death-defying descents. Can you list either in a reply or a future blog post your favourite/most challenging trails locally? My wife and I seek out the hardest trails in PLPP and really enjoy them, but they’re all wide and manageable.

just wondering if you ever get a chance to get out to the trails by Sandy McNabb, west of Turner Valley? I am curious about the trails north of the highway, Death Valley et al? With the recent snowfall, they may still not have enough snow as they were pretty bare before.
I’ve skied them all in years past, and I really enjoyed the Sandy McNabb trails but don’t get out there anymore, now that SkierBob world headquarters has moved to Canmore. Death Valley was a lot of fun but it required a lot of snow to cover the many rocks. There is an update on the Kananaskis trail report which shows a few trails have been trackset. -Bob
