West Bragg Creek

The dogs were happy and smiling, and so was I. The conditions are remarkably superb at West Bragg Creek, probably the best I’ve ever seen. Years ago, when I lived in Calgary, I skied at West Bragg quite a bit but rarely did I see snow and grooming like it is now.

I had to go to Calgary today, so made a stop at West Bragg, arriving at 2:45 pm when the temperature had warmed up to -7°C. The parking lot was chock-a-block with vehicles and they were lined up on the road, but I was able to get a parking spot near the trailhead as early skiers had already left.

I was hoping to see lots of dogs and I wasn’t disappointed. As soon as I got out of my car, there was a friendly collie there to greet me. I used my skis from yesterday which already had VR40(-4/-12) on them and I had excellent grip. Near the end of the day it was even starting to grab a bit, so you know the snow was cold.

I skied Mountain road, Moose connector, West crystal, Loggers, Sundog, and Iron springs(out and back on new grooming). All wonderful. I climbed to the high point on Iron springs and was surprised to see on my GPS that I was 130 metres higher than at the trailhead.

The temperature had already dropped to -11 by 4:15 pm.

If I lived in Calgary, I’d go without food in order to make a large donation to the Greater Bragg Creek Trails Association for the excellent work they do.

Erik found someone’s sunglasses:

“Found. West Bragg Creek on the road leaving the parking lot. One pair of sunglasses. Sebago’s. will reserve the colour for the owner to reveal. I hate losing things, so I hope the owner sees this. My guess is they were on the roof of a car and they made it about 100 m down the road before falling off. 587-438-0029 text me.”

I see TSJ is out tracksetting right now(10:15 pm) on Terrace. He’s already completed Bill Milne, Wedge, Ribbon creek, Link, lower Kovach.

One Comment:

  1. I was at West Bragg Creek yesterday too and also lucked out at finding a parking space near the trailhead in the main parking lot at noon.
    Question RE the dogs.
They are supposed to be on leash, no?
Two dogs (off leash) came running at my child, scared him and knocked him over on his skis. While he was lying on the ground, one of the dogs started jumping over top of him.
I’m sure the dog was just excited but my son wasn’t entirely thrilled with the whole experience.
The owner came up but he didn’t utter a single word of apology, call his dogs to him, or do anything to control his unruly dogs.
I was quite disappointed by the whole experience because I expect more from people who choose to ski with their dogs.

It’s unfortunate, but among dozens of responsible dog-owners, which I observed yesterday, you’ll find one who is not responsible. There are numerous signs which indicate where dogs are allowed off-leash. As it illustrates in this photo which I took yesterday, dogs are allowed off-leash but the owners are expected to have them under control. http://skierbob.ca/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/DSC05835.jpg
