Early skiers at the Canmore Nordic Centre could have used wax, but when I arrived at 11 a.m. the snow was already becoming wet so I used my waxless skis.
It was six months ago when we made our first laps on Frozen Thunder. I believe the air temperature was exactly the same as on that day in October at +4°C. We only had 2.2K of trail back then whereas now there’s about 60K.
The conditions were great if you didn’t mind going a bit slow on the wet snow. The skating lane was firmer and faster. There’s still excellent snow coverage and most trails were trackset this morning.
It got quite warm(+8) in Canmore today, so I expect that by late afternoon, the tracks would have been total slush. Whether the trails get trackset again tonight will depend on the temperature. Check the Live Grooming Report in the morning.
Snow conditions have been excellent for most of the winter at the nordic centre. We had a brief period in the middle of winter where it got warm and windy and we had to deal with tree debris but it didn’t last very long. Overall, a good ski season.
Next winter’s Frozen Thunder is in the freezer and we’ll be skiing on it in a mere six months!
A snowfall warning has been issued for Banff National Park. 10 – 15 cm by tomorrow.
What a country we live in! Six months of winter! Is it any wonder we gravitate to skiing?
Why stop at just 6 months of skiing?
I think you hold the record for the most consecutive months of skiing in the world! I know you probably don’t want to blow your horn but it would be interesting to float it out for a Guinness World Record.
What a great idea.
Here’s a photo of Alf practicing for the world record back around 1980.
Here’s the photo:

You can’t have a world record at something, until you stop. I have no intention of stopping skiing every month.
It’s neat seeing photos of CNC 6 months apart. I also can’t believe how time flies. It just seems like yesterday when we were getting our first reports by Bob from the front lines at Frozen Thunder.
What strikes me like a baseball bat to the gut in the October photo of Frozen Thunder, is that you can palpably sense the ‘feeling’ of that incredible autumn day in the Rockie just from the photo. I can see how it gets the adrenaline of all you skiers going 🙂
Still skiing, and still optimistic 🙂
STILL SKIING?
Your’re days are numbered… in hours!

Why not… winter is far from over… snow fall warning tonight… again!
You are so fortunate.
Crocuses waiting for you in the valley when you come down from your ski -)
