10 – 20 cm would be a nice start

Excellent snow conditions on Frozen Thunder and more snow is on the way

The snow guns will be helping to improve conditions on Frozen Thunder

Sunday at 7:15 a.m. in Canmore we’ve received only a dusting of snow so far. Be careful when you step foot outside, as there was some freezing rain pre-snow. The temperature is -5°C and dropping.

It appears from the forecasts that we can expect this snowfall to be widespread, so all of our favourite ski areas should get it. Whether it will be enough to start grooming, I guess we’ll have to wait and see. The Lake Louise webcam looks very promising. On a day like this, my webcams page gets a lot of hits.

Has anyone used frost tape to protect your face?

Has anyone used frost tape to protect your face?

Although I’m not thrilled by several days of Arctic deep freeze which will follow the snow, the other side of that coin is that the snow will stay around, and the Canmore Nordic Centre will be making snow. Already the snow guns are going full blast.

I came across this face protection tape on Twitter. Frost Tape. Has anyone used it? Where is it available?

  1. With 10 cm on the ground in NW Calgary by mid-afternoon, I skied from my back door, down the lane and set a 1.5 km loop around the Birthplace Forest in Silver Springs. The skiing was quite enjoyable over a base of grass, or wood chip paths, and after a few laps the track was good enough to get a nice kick and glide rhythm going. After finishing up a great fall mountain bike season in warm sun on Saturday, it made for a nice start to my xc ski season.

  2. Occasionally I post frivolous and unimportant updates on Twitter, such as how much snow has fallen today. If you want to encumber yourself with this trivial information, follow me on Twitter https://twitter.com/SkiHere

  3. Frost tape seems to be a modern version of Dr Scholl’s moleskin for foot blisters. I started using moleskin years ago after I had to drop out of the Kananaskis loppet when an observant race official at the Bolton Creek refreshment station told me I had frostbite on my face. Its inexpensive, readily available and is easy to peel off after skiing. I can’t use ski face shields or balaclavas because my eyeglasses fog up. Moleskin may look funny but its better looking than a frostbitten face!

    • This photo of frost tape has taken the thunder from my potential joke, which was to have a photo showing Spidertech tape applied on a science olympian’s head.
