Before I get started, and with these bitterly cold temperatures, it might be prudent to review the 26 helpful comments on this old post Cold Weather Gear.
Running into Steve Shymoniak on Terrace trail a couple weeks ago had me digging through old photos. Steve is pictured in the above photo in the red jacket.
The above photo at West Bragg Creek was from a winter when we had early snow and the entire ski season had excellent conditions. It was from a Calgary Ski Club daytrip and the following day we skied at Sandy McNabb.
It was the only winter where I didn’t ski at Moraine Lake road in November because conditions were so good closer to Calgary.
By the end of November we had also skied on trackset trails at
- Hawk Ridge
- Ribbon Creek
- Canada Olympic Park
- North end of PLPP
- Cascade Valley (Cascade fire road in those days)
- Shaganappi Golf Course
- Goat Creek
- Tyrwhitt Loop
- Canmore Nordic Centre
I’ve been enjoying the discussion between Legalize Real Democracy and Darrell regarding logging in Banff. Both offer good insight and suggestions and better yet, the discussion has been about ideas and hasn’t devolved into personal insults. Thanks for keeping it respectful.
MaSid posted a Couch Surfer’s Guide to Maintenance on the trip reports. I’ve posted his comment on a special page which you can access from the Resources tab on the main menu.
Next loppet on the schedule is the Birkebeiner near Edmonton on the weekend. The forecast is for cold temperatures. I remember doing the Birkie one year in -20. The Birkie has posted this guide to skiing in cold weather which is relevant to all of us.
