The national team

Today, Canada’s national cross-country ski team posed for this magnificent photo for SkiHere(okay, I’ll admit they were also posing for CTV News, Canadian Press, Shaw cable, etc).

In conjunction with the Grand Opening of Frozen Thunder at the Canmore Nordic Centre, the national team was introduced to the press and public. It was a glorious day amid the backdrop of the Rockies under a bright blue sky with Frozen Thunder under foot ski.

The team made a lot of progress last winter, hi-lited with a gold medal at the world championships in Norway. We can look forward to more breakthroughs and medals from this dedicated and talented group of world-class athletes this year.

Having Frozen Thunder gives the national team a nice jump-start on the season. Justin Wadsworth, the team’s head coach said, “It’s the kind of advantage you almost can’t imagine, our World Cup athletes are going to hit the first World Cups and have already logged three weeks of skiing in our back yard.”

The team’s first FIS race happens in Sweden Nov 11 – 13. The senior world cup team includes Alex Harvey (St.-Ferreol, Que.); Devon Kershaw (Sudbury, Ont.); Ivan Babikov (Canmore, Alta.); Len Valjas (Toronto); Chandra Crawford (Canmore, Alta.); and Perianne Jones (Almonte, Ont.). Daria Gaiazova (Banff, Alta.) will also compete on the World Cup circuit this year as a member of Canada’s Senior Team.

There will be a couple stories tonight on the supper news and sports on CTV(Calgary CH3).

This is the press release from Cross Country Canada Athletes to benefit from unique early-season snow. Frozen Thunder to support 2011 – 2012 ski team’s international medal hopes.
